Has Mitt Romney already won the Michigan primary? (+video)

Among voters who have already cast absentee ballots, Mitt Romney is the overwhelming favorite, according to the latest PPP poll. That could save him from an embarrassing loss to Rick Santorum.

Mitt Romney may already have Michigan in the bag. Not that he?s cheating or anything. It?s all about the absentee vote ? which polling shows will account for a significant portion of the Republican ballot.

In a poll of Michigan Republicans taken Feb. 26, Public Policy Polling (PPP) found that 16 percent of Republican primary voters will have already voted before Tuesday. Of that 16 percent, a large majority say they voted for Romney: 62 percent, versus 29 percent for Rick Santorum.

How do those numbers play out as actual votes? Four years ago, 869,000 people voted in Michigan?s Republican presidential primary. If the same number turn out this time, that?s 139,000 absentee votes. If you take 62 percent of that, that?s 86,204 votes already in the Romney column, versus 40,321 votes for Santorum.

So Romney appears to have a nice cushion heading into primary day ? especially critical, given that those who plan to vote on Tuesday favor Santorum over Romney, 39 percent to 34 percent, according to PPP. ?

If Romney ends up winning Michigan by a narrow margin ? saving him the embarrassment of losing in his native state ? he could have those absentee ballots to thank.

?Early voting could be Romney?s savior,? says a Michigan Republican who is not publicly aligned.

PFT: Rams willing to trade out of No. 2 spot

1987 NFC Divisional Playoff Game - Washington Redskins vs Chicago Bears - January 10, 1988Getty Images

The various concussion-related lawsuits filed in recent months have suddenly taken on a far more serious tone.? According to NBC Chicago, Dave Duerson?s estate has filed a wrongful death action against the NFL.

Duerson committed suicide on February 17, 2011.? The lawsuit claims that, ?[i]f the NFL would have taken the necessary steps to oversee and protect Dave Duerson by warning him of the dangers of head traumas . . . then [he] would not have suffered dangerous repetitive head trauma, would have recovered more rapidly, and would not have sustained permanent damage to his brain which contributed to his death.?

This allegation presumes that the NFL knew or should have known about the dangers of head traumas during Duerson?s career, and that he would have chosen not to play if that information had been shared with him.

?CTE has been a known entity to the NFL for years,? said William Gibbs, who represents the Duerson estate.? ?This degenerative brain disease causes various symptoms ranging from cognitive decline to dementia.?? The NFL?s blatant disregard of the significance of this crisis amongst its retirees is baffling.?

?We have not seen the lawsuit and therefore our attorneys have not had an opportunity to review it,? the league said in a statement forwarded to PFT.? ?Dave Duerson was an outstanding football player and
citizen who made so many positive contributions but unfortunately encountered serious personal challenges later in his life. We sympathize with the Duerson family and continue to be saddened by this tragedy.?

Hundreds of former players have filed suit against the league, claiming that the NFL knew about the long-term dangers of concussions and failed to disclose those risks to players.? The NFL has argued that relief should be pursued through the collective bargaining process, given that players have been represented by a union, the NFL Players Association.

Duerson played from 1983 through 1993, with the Bears, Giants, and Cardinals, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings.? He was one of the named plaintiffs in the Reggie White antitrust lawsuit, and he was a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee.

Last year, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said that Duerson?s death has ?shaken me personally.?? The NFLPA hasn?t said anything about the various and growing concussion lawsuits.? In response to Duerson?s lawsuit, spokesman George Atallah told PFT that the NFLPA has no comment.

Given Duerson?s past role in the NFLPA, one thing to watch going forward is whether the NFLPA will take an affirmative position on the merit of the allegations that the NFL knew about the risks of head injuries and failed to take appropriate action.

Report: Companies whose tech targets protesters

11 hrs.

In an?ongoing series?profiling both United States and European companies that sell spy tech to authoritarian regimes, the Electronic Frontier Foundation calls out companies whose customers included Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and former Tunisia president Ben Ali, among others.

"As long as these companies believe that it is okay to sell this technology to dictators, democracy activists, human rights activists, bloggers, and journalists around the world will continue to suffer," the EFF writes. By calling out these companies, the advocacy continues to urge the United States and European Union to adopt "know your customer" standards, which would prevent Western companies in selling to governments known for violating human rights.?

Area SpA's overtime in Syria
During the height of Syria's violent crackdown on democratic protesters in March 2011, Area SpA employees were flown into Damascus, the country's capitol, to finish a project that would allow the government ?to intercept, scan and catalog virtually every email that flows through the country,? Bloomberg reported.

Following protests outside of Area SpA's Italian office, the company announced it would no longer honor the contract with the Syrian government, stating that it was Area SpA was ?against all forms of repression and disapproves of any use of technology for violating human rights.? The equipment used in the government's escalating crackdown was already in place however. And as the EFF notes, y the time "Area SpA claimed it would exit the country in November, the civilian death toll in Syria already stood at more than 3,000."

Trovicor and the Arab Spring trifecta
The EFF describes Germany-based Trovicor as "perhaps the most prolific of the mass surveillance companies, having sold spy technology to a dozen countries in the Middle East and North Africa."?

The former Nokia-Siemens subsidiary counts the governments of Iran, Bahrain and Tunisia as its customers, three countries active in the Arab Spring uprisings. ?

Nokia Siemens divested from Trovicor after it was revealed the company sold spy tech to the Iranian government following the post-election uprisings in 2009.?

In Bahrain, Trovicor still maintains the monitoring centers it originally installed that helped surveil emails, text messages and phone calls. "Almost two-dozen former political prisoners recently testified to the England and Wales lawyers association that they were beaten and subsequently interrogated while being shown transcripts of emails and text messages," the EFF notes. "There have been at least 140 documented allegations of torture in Bahrain in the past last year."

Trovicor is also among the companies that sold spy tech to former president Ben Ali, and the EFF calls out Bloomberg's report on Trovicor?s dangerous capabilities:

[Trovicor?s] toolbox allows more than the interception of phone calls, e-mails, text messages and Voice Over Internet Protocol calls such as those made using Skype. Some products can also secretly activate laptop webcams or microphones on mobile devices. They can change the contents of written communications in mid-transmission, use voice recognition to scan phone networks, and pinpoint people?s locations through their mobile phones. The monitoring systems can scan communications for key words or recognize voices and then feed the data and recordings to operators at government agencies.

In the coming weeks, the EFF will continue to profile the dozens of companies in the U.S. and the European Union that supply equipment to countries known for human rights violations, promising to continue until "Congress and the EU countries act to prevent more of this dangerous technology from falling into the wrong hands."

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about privacy and then asks you to join her on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.?Because that's how she rolls.

Restless Aleutian volcano could erupt, scientists say

A volcano in Alaska's Aleutian Islands has rumbled to life and is at risk of a sudden explosion, scientists said on Sunday.

Kanaga Volcano, located 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage near the port city of Adak, had a tremor Saturday morning followed by other seismic activity for about an hour, said the federal-state Alaska Volcano Observatory.

After that, satellite data detected what is believed to be a thin ash cloud emitted from Kanaga, the observatory said.

The activity prompted the observatory to issue a code-yellow advisory for air travelers and others in the region.

"This new unrest indicates a possibility for sudden explosions of ash to occur at any time, and ash clouds exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level may develop," the observatory said in its advisory.

The last eruptions from 4,288-foot Kanaga were in 1994 and 1995 , when the volcano sent up ash clouds, dusted the nearby community of Adak and disrupted air traffic, according to the observatory.

Adak is a former Navy station that has been converted into a service center for the North Pacific commercial fisheries fleet.

The town has about 330 residents, a state-owned airport left over from Navy operations, a seafood processing plant and numerous maritime-service operations.

Kanaga's new activity comes as another restless Aleutian volcano also has shown signs that it might explode and send ash clouds into the atmosphere.

Cleveland Volcano, located on an uninhabited island 940 miles southwest of Anchorage, had an ash-producing explosion in late December. It has been active since July, mostly oozing lava up through its summit crater, where the lava hardens into a dome.

That lava movement is continuing, according to satellite data monitored by the Alaska Volcano Observatory. A new lava dome, about 60 meters wide, now stands at the crater, replacing a bigger dome that was blasted away by the December explosion, according to the observatory.

Lava domes such as that atop 5,676-foot Cleveland Volcano could trap pressure and trigger explosions, observatory scientists have said.

The observatory has issued a code-orange watch for Cleveland Volcano site to alert aviators and others.

Though Cleveland and Kanaga are remote, ash-producing eruptions at either are consider potential aviation threats, as they lie along major aviation routes between North America and Asia. (Editing by Dan Whitcomb and Ellen Wulfhorst)

A couple of my favorites are 25 E 1st for price/size/location (Yes, it only has 1 full bath) and 106 E Lincoln 3,154 sf 3 bed, 2.5 bath with character all over the place.

The six listings in contract, as usual, had an average days on market closer to 30 and as little as 6 days for the 3 bed, 1 bath, needs work 200 West Fourth Street ? a 1616 sq ft foreclosure on the market at $174,900 that had multiple offers.

In the last six months, 24 homes have sold in the Short North area which, for recap purposes here, includes Victorian Village, Italian Village, Harrison West and the Circles. ?Those sold homes in the Short North averaged about $$273,000 or $137/sq ft. after an average 4 months on the market. Important to note?the average and median sales price/list price was 94%.

Of note, 7 of those homes, more than 1/4 of all the homes, were 2 bedroom homes averaging $147/sf. Remember, the smaller the home, the more it costs/sq ft. ?The average 3 bedroom home in the Short North sold for about $150/sf or $282,145 for around 2000 sq ft.

(AP) ? One autumn morning in Buffalo, N.Y., a college student named Adeela Khan logged into her email and found a message announcing an upcoming Islamic conference in Toronto.

Khan clicked "forward," sent it to a group of fellow Muslims at the University at Buffalo, and promptly forgot about it.

But that simple act on Nov. 9, 2006, was enough to arouse the suspicion of an intelligence analyst at the New York Police Department, 300 miles away, who combed through her post and put her name in an official report. Marked "SECRET" in large red letters, the document went all the way to Commissioner Raymond Kelly's office.

The report, along with other documents obtained by The Associated Press, reveals how the NYPD's intelligence division focused far beyond New York City as part of a surveillance program targeting Muslims.

Police trawled daily through student websites run by Muslim student groups at Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers and 13 other colleges in the Northeast. They talked with local authorities about professors in Buffalo and even sent an undercover agent on a whitewater rafting trip, where he recorded students' names and noted in police intelligence files how many times they prayed.

Asked about the monitoring, police spokesman Paul Browne provided a list of 12 people arrested or convicted on terrorism charges in the United States and abroad who had once been members of Muslim student associations, which the NYPD referred to as MSAs. They included Jesse Morton, who this month pleaded guilty to posting online threats against the creators of the animated TV show "South Park." He had once tried to recruit followers at Stony Brook University on Long Island, Browne said.

"As a result, the NYPD deemed it prudent to get a better handle on what was occurring at MSAs," Browne said in an email. He said police monitored student websites and collected publicly available information in 2006 and 2007.But documents show other surveillance efforts continued for years afterward.

"I see a violation of civil rights here," said Tanweer Haq, chaplain of the Muslim Student Association at Syracuse University. "Nobody wants to be on the list of the FBI or the NYPD or whatever. Muslim students want to have their own lives, their own privacy and enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities that everybody else has."

In recent months, the AP has revealed secret programs the NYPD built with help from the CIA to monitor Muslims at the places where they eat, shop and worship. The AP also published details about how police placed undercover officers at Muslim student associations in colleges within the city limits; this revelation has outraged faculty and student groups.

Though the NYPD says it follows the same rules as the FBI, some of the NYPD's activities go beyond what the FBI is allowed to do.

Kelly and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg repeatedly have said that the police only follow legitimate leads about suspected criminal activity.

But the latest documents mention no wrongdoing by any students.

In one report, an undercover officer describes accompanying 18 Muslim students from the City College of New York on a whitewater rafting trip in upstate New York on April 21, 2008. The officer noted the names of attendees who were officers of the Muslim Student Association.

"In addition to the regularly scheduled events (Rafting), the group prayed at least four times a day, and much of the conversation was spent discussing Islam and was religious in nature," the report says.

Praying five times a day is one of the core traditions of Islam.

Jawad Rasul, one of the students on the trip, said he was stunned that his name was included in the police report.

"It forces me to look around wherever I am now," Rasul said.

But another student, Ali Ahmed, whom the NYPD said appeared to be in charge of the trip, said he understood the police department's concern.

"I can't blame them for doing their job," Ahmed said. "There's lots of Muslims doing some bad things and it gives a bad name to all of us, so they have to take their due diligence."

City College criticized the surveillance and said it was unaware the NYPD was watching students.

"The City College of New York does not accept or condone any investigation of any student organization based on the political or religious content of its ideas," the college said in a written statement. "Absent specific evidence linking a member of the City College community to criminal activity, we do not condone this kind of investigation."

Browne said undercover officers go wherever people they're investigating go. There is no indication that, in the nearly four years since the report, the NYPD brought charges connecting City College students to terrorism.

Student groups were of particular interest to the NYPD because they attract young Muslim men, a demographic that terrorist groups frequently draw from. Police worried about which Muslim scholars were influencing these students and feared that extracurricular activities such as paintball outings could be used as terrorist training.

The AP first reported in October that the NYPD had placed informants or undercover officers in the Muslim Student Associations at City College, Brooklyn College, Baruch College, Hunter College, City College of New York, Queens College, La Guardia Community College and St. John's University. All of those colleges are within the New York City limits.

A person familiar with the program, who like others insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it, said the NYPD also had a student informant at Syracuse.

Police also were interested in the Muslim student group at Rutgers, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 2009, undercover NYPD officers had a safe house in an apartment not far from campus. The operation was blown when the building superintendent stumbled upon the safe house and, thinking it was some sort of a terrorist cell, called the police emerency dispatcher.

The FBI responded and determined that monitoring Rutgers students was one of the operation's objectives, current and former federal officials said.

The Rutgers police chief at the time, Rhonda Harris, would not discuss the fallout. In a written statement, university spokesman E.J. Miranda said: "The university was not aware of this at the time and we have nothing to add on this matter."

Another NYPD intelligence report from Jan. 2, 2009, described a trip by three NYPD officers to Buffalo, where they met with a high-ranking member of the Erie County Sheriff's Department and agreed "to develop assets jointly in the Buffalo area, to act as listening posts within the ethnic Somalian community."

The sheriff's department official noted "that there are some Somali Professors and students at SUNY-Buffalo and it would be worthwhile to further analyze that population," the report says.

Browne said the NYPD did not follow that recommendation. A spokesman for the university, John DellaContrada, said the NYPD never contacted the administration. Sheriff's Departments spokeswoman Mary Murray could not immediately confirm the meeting or say whether the proposal went any further.

The document that mentions Khan, the University at Buffalo student, is entitled "Weekly MSA Report" and dated Nov. 22, 2006. It explains that officers from the NYPD's Cyber Intelligence unit visited the websites, blogs and forums of Muslim student associations as a "daily routine."

The universities included Yale; Columbia; the University of Pennsylvania; Syracuse; New York University; Clarkson University; the Newark and New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers; and the State University of New York campuses in Buffalo, Albany, Stony Brook and Potsdam; Queens College, Baruch College, Brooklyn College and La Guardia Community College.

Khan was a board member of the Muslim Student Association at the University at Buffalo at the time she received the conference announcement, which went out to a mailing list of Muslim organizations.

The email said "highly respected scholars" would be attending the Toronto conference, but did not say who or give any details of the program. Khan says she never went to the conference, was not affiliated with it and had no idea who was speaking at it.

Khan says she clicked "forward" and sent it to a Yahoo chat group of fellow students.

"A couple people had gone the year prior and they said they had a really nice time, so I was just passing the information on forward. That's really all it was," said Khan, who has since graduated.

But officer Mahmood Ahmad of the NYPD's Cyber Intelligence Unit took notice and listed Khan in his weekly report for Kelly. The officer began researching the Toronto conference and found that one of the speakers, Tariq Ramadan, had his U.S. visa revoked in 2004. The U.S. government said it was because Ramadan had given money to a Palestinian group. It reinstated his visa in 2010.

The officer's report notes three other speakers. One, Siraj Wahaj, is a prominent but controversial New York imam who has attracted the attention of authorities for years. Prosecutors included his name on a 3 ?-page list of people they said "may be alleged as co-conspirators" in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, though he was never charged.

The other two are Hamza Yusuf and Zaid Shakir, two of the nation's most prominent Muslim scholars. Both have lectured at top universities in the U.S.. Yusuf met with President George W. Bush at the White House following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

There is no indication that the investigation went any further, or that Khan was ever implicated in anything. Browne, the NYPD spokesman, said students like her have nothing to fear from the police.

"Students who advertised events or sent emails about regular events should not be worried about a 'terrorism file' being kept on them. NYPD only investigated persons who we had reasonable suspicion to believe might be involved in unlawful activities," Browne said.

But Khan still worries about being associated with the police report.

"It's just a waste of resources, if you ask me," she said. "I understand why they're doing it, but it's just kind of like a Catch-22. I'm not the one doing anything wrong."

The university said it was unaware its students were being monitored.

"UB does not conduct this kind of surveillance and if asked, UB would not voluntarily cooperate with such a request," the university said in a written statement. "As a public university, UB strongly supports the values of freedom of speech and assembly, freedom of religion, and a reasonable expectation of privacy."

The same Nov. 22, 2006, report also noted seminars announced on the websites of the Muslim student associations at New York University and Rutgers University's campus in Newark, New Jersey.

Browne said intelligence analysts were interested in recruiting by the Islamic Thinkers Society, a New York-based group that wants to see the United States governed under Islamic law. Morton was a leader of the group and went to Stony Brook University's MSA to recruit students that same month.

"One thing that our open source searches were interested in determining at the time was, where (does the) Islamic Thinkers Society go ? in terms of MSAs for recruiting," Browne said.

Yale declined comment. The University of Pennsylvania did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Other colleges on the list said they worried the monitoring infringed on students' freedom of speech.

"Like New York City itself, American universities are admired across the globe as places that welcome a diversity of people and viewpoints. So we would obviously be concerned about anything that could chill our essential values of academic freedom or intrude on student privacy," Columbia University spokesman Robert Hornsby said in a written statement.

Danish Munir, an alumnus adviser for the University of Pennsylvania's Muslim Student Association, said he believes police are wasting their time by watching college students.

"What do they expect to find here?" Munir said. "These are all kids coming from rich families or good families, and they're just trying to make a living, have a good career, have a good college experience. It's a futile allocation of resources."

UGA pinpoints important factors in workplace safety - Athens, GA ...

Each year in the U.S., about 6,000 workers die on the job, and millions are injured.

According to a recent University of Georgia study, authored by workplace safety depends on whether:

  1. ???? workers think management emphasizes workplace safety; and
  2. ???? business policies result in interference with family demands.

"We've known for some time that certain occupations are more dangerous than others due to a variety of physical and other hazards," said UGA professor Dave DeJoy. "But in the last 20 years, there has been growing evidence that management and organizational factors also play a critical role. That is, actions taken or not taken at the organizational level can either set the stage for injuries or help prevent them."

DeJoy coauthored the study? with Todd Smith, a recent graduate of the Health Promotion and Behavior doctoral program in the UGA College of Public Heallth.

They examined nine factors potentially affecting workplace safety: management-employee relations, participation, safety climate, work-family interference, job content, organizational effectiveness, advancement potential, resource adequacy and supervisor support.

"Most prior research on organizational factors has focused on single occupations or single organizations," says DeJoy. "There has been a clear need to examine these factors across a diverse array of occupations and employment circumstances."

A failure of management

In one of their more interesting findings, they determined that when a worker perceives his or her work environment as safe (as one where management emphasizes on-the-job safety), it can reduce injuries by as much 32 percent. Moreover, businesss that place minimal constraints on worker performance and that run in a smooth and effective manner can reduce injuries by 38 percent.

"Injury is a failure of management,? says DeJoy. ?Organizations who blame individuals for injuries do not create a positive safety climate."

Smith, too, emphasized the organizational factor in safety: "We can design the best safety controls, but they must be maintained, and that falls on management. Enacted policies and procedures?not formalized ones but those acted upon?define a climate of safety."

Home-workplace safety conflicts

The study also found that conflict between family and job demands can increase injuries by as much as 37 percent.

"We used to think work was one thing and family was another,? says DeJoy, ?but now there is a realization that work-life balance affects performance and productivity."

The results of the study were published online in January in a paper entitled up ?Occupational Injury in America: An analysis of risk factors using data from the General Social Survey (GSS)? and will appear in the March issue of the Journal of Safety Research.

Being a pill about the pill? Santorum vs US views

(AP) ? Most Americans don't share Rick Santorum's absolutist take on abortion. He's out of step on women in combat. He questions the values of the two-thirds of mothers who work. He's even troubled by something as commonplace as birth control ? for married couples.

Even among a Republican presidential field eager to please religious conservatives, Santorum's ideas stand out.

A Catholic father of seven whose kids are home-schooled, Santorum may seem to wear his conservatism as comfortably as his sweater vests. But he's walked a careful path, keeping the more provocative opinions that helped sink his re-election to the Senate in 2006 mostly out of his presidential campaign.

That is until he leaped to the top of the polls, alongside Mitt Romney.

Now Santorum's record on social issues is getting a closer look. On several matters, he's outside the Republican mainstream. And if he becomes the GOP nominee, some of his ideas would probably be surprising, even puzzling, to general election voters.

BIRTH CONTROL

? Santorum: Says he wouldn't try to take away the pill or condoms. But he believes states should be free to ban them if they want. He argues that the Supreme Court erred when it ruled in 1965 that married Americans have a right to privacy that includes the use of contraceptives.

Birth control, even within marriage, violates his beliefs as a Roman Catholic. Last year Santorum told the Christian blog Caffeinated Thoughts that as president he would warn the nation about "the dangers of contraception" and the permissive culture it encourages. "Many of Christian faith have said, 'Well, that's OK. Contraception is OK,'" he said. "It's not OK. It's a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be. ... If it's not for purposes of procreation, then you diminish this very special bond between men and women."

On Friday Santorum told "CBS This Morning" that as a senator he supported federal money for birth control services but he also wants to promote abstinence "as a healthier alternative."

? Catholics: Despite the church's teachings, 84 percent of U.S. Catholics believe a person who uses artificial birth control can still be a good Catholic, according to a CBS News poll. And 89 percent of Catholic women favor expanding access to birth control for those who can't afford it, the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute found.

? All Americans: Almost all say contraception is OK. Three-fourths of U.S. women have taken the pill, the CBS News poll says, and other studies show nearly all sexually active women have used some type of birth control. A mere 8 percent of Americans think birth control is morally wrong, according to a Pew Research Center poll this month. Four in 10 say it's not even a moral issue these days.

WORKING WOMEN

? Santorum: His 2005 book, "It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good," suggests parents in two-income families aren't doing what's best for the kids. Too often, he writes, both parents work when the family could get by on one salary: "For some parents, the purported need to provide things for their children simply provides a convenient rationalization for pursuing a gratifying career outside the home." He described it as a sad situation created by "radical feminists" who undermined the traditional family by "convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness."

Santorum's unsuccessful re-election bid took a hit from a rival's TV ad featuring a working mother challenging the senator "to come to my house at the end of the month when we're doing our bills and tell me how we can live on one income." Santorum recently tried to deflect questions about the book by saying that his wife, who left her nursing career to care for their children, helped write that section because she felt her decision to become a stay-at-home mom wasn't valued by society. He predicted a Santorum administration would have "plenty of working moms."

? All Americans: Two-thirds of married mothers are working or looking for jobs, according to the Labor Department. Like Santorum, most Americans don't think it's best for children when moms work full time; they're divided over whether staying at home or working part time is ideal. But more moms are working for economic reasons than personal satisfaction. Half of full-time working mothers would rather work part time, and a third would prefer to stay home, according to a 2009 Pew Research Center poll. Only about 1 in 10 of the moms working full-time says it's an ideal situation.

WOMEN IN COMBAT

? Santorum: Spoke out against women in combat when the Pentagon announced plans to allow them to serve closer to the front. He says he worries that fighting men will be distracted by their "natural instinct" to protect women. He also says the differences in physical abilities between men and women aren't being taken into account.

? Republicans: Six in 10 would allow women to serve in units that engage in close combat; about a third are opposed, a Quinnipiac University poll last year found.

? All Americans: Slightly more favorable toward women in combat than Republicans.

GAYS IN THE MILITARY

? Santorum: Wants to reinstate the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that banned openly gay service members. In a GOP debate in Florida, Santorum said lifting the ban was social engineering and "sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military." He added: "Keep it to yourself whether you're a heterosexual or a homosexual."

? Republicans: Santorum's party is divided on the issue. A CBS News poll gave a 48-41 edge to supporters of gays serving openly in the military. Republicans who felt strongly about the issue were twice as likely to support gays in the military than to oppose them, however.

? All Americans: A big majority ? 68 percent ? favor allowing gays to serve openly, the same poll found.

ABORTION

? Santorum: Favors amending the Constitution to ban abortion. He says that human life begins at conception and doctors who perform abortions should be charged as criminals. In his book, he compared women who have abortions to 19th-century slaveholders, writing that "unlike abortion today, in most states even the slaveholder did not have the unlimited right to kill his slave." In the past, Santorum supported allowing abortions in cases of rape or incest, but he now says no to those exceptions.

? Republicans: Although united in the belief that abortion should be illegal in most cases ? two-thirds say so ? an overwhelming majority of Republicans are willing to make some exceptions. Only a fifth say abortion should always be illegal, according to AP-GfK polling in August.

? All Americans: Even less likely to say there should be no abortions at all ? 16 percent support a total ban. About half of Americans want abortion to be legal in most cases, and almost as many say it should be mostly illegal.
