The Xiamen court declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

The case, one of the largest graft scandals in communist China's 62-year history, exposed a tight relationship between officials and entrepreneurs in the free-wheeling port city of Xiamen.

It has received huge attention in China, where corruption is one of the key causes of public discontent.

As the case unravelled in the late 1990s, Lai managed to escape to Canada on a tourist visa, but was deported back to China in July last year after a 12-year battle against repatriation.

He claimed the accusations against him were politically motivated and sought asylum, sparking a diplomatic tug-of-war that tested the countries' relations.

Lai's career in crime delivered the material for thousands of media reports and several books, delving into how he paid off officials and entertained them in a lavish private club known as the "red mansion".

At the time the People's Daily newspaper -- mouthpiece of the Communist Party -- said the club, with its sumptuous eateries, ballrooms, karaoke bars, saunas, cinemas and bedrooms, was where dozens of high-ranking officials "resigned themselves to degeneracy and became tools of Lai's group".

While he was reviled in the national press, Lai was also known to some as a modern-day Robin Hood who would lavish money and goods on local communities near Xiamen where he grew up in poverty.

The reaction to Lai's sentence on China's popular microblogs appeared to suggest many people still thought well of him.

"Smuggling isn't right, but people here still remember when petrol was just two yuan per litre," one Internet user said. Another responded: "You're right. He was a good guy. But only the locals know."

His trial was open to the public and numerous government officials and Lai family members attended, Xinhua said.

weather channel noaa mike brown jacoby ellsbury jacoby ellsbury lionel richie morosini death
motryucohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768737961051693656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1456234251010720488.post-53360240656354365842012-05-18T19:36:00.001-07:002012-05-18T19:36:12.334-07:00Online Advertising ROI Calculator - Internet Marketing Tips, Tools ...
Leave a Reply Cancel reply

Your email address will not be published. What began as an intimate platform has turned into a social networking giant serving more than 900 million users.

Facebook may be cashing in on its intial public offering this week, but it wasn?t the first to introduce the world to online social networking ? many other sites were once recognized as the most popular. What made them fall by the wayside?

For some, it was server instability or lack of financial support to hit the ground running. Other formerly popular networks received the necessary monetary backing, but were inhibited by the corporation that had acquired them ? and some went on to morph the company into something broader than just social networking.

SEE ALSO: Mark Zuckerberg: Smart or Lucky? [POLL]

But perhaps the most important reason why other sites couldn?t compete with Facebook?s current growth is timing. Today, the web is stronger, faster and more crowded than ever ? people rely on an Internet connection to communicate, earn revenue and entertain, among many other things. That wasn?t the case 10 to 20 years ago.

Take a look at some of the past social networking kings that existed before Facebook. That?s not to say all weren?t successful. Most are still around, but in a different form from which they originated.

1. AOL

For many computer users in the mid ?90s, the Internet was AOL. From chat rooms to the ubiqutous AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), AOL was the center of online activity. The company acquired one of the dominant desktop browsers (Netscape), the leading streaming music and MP3 services (WinAmp) and was the king of Web 1.0.

SEE ALSO: AOL Founder Warns Zuckerberg: Don?t Get Distracted by Facebook IPO

Then in 2001, AOL acquired Time Warner in its bid to become a media company. The merger was a disaster ? one of the worst in business history. The fallout from the merger prevented AOL from keeping its eye on the evolving nature of technology, including broadband and real-time social channels.

AOL tried to compete again in the social space in the mid ?00s, but blunders like 2008?s $1 billion acquisition prevented success. Today, AOL is known as a media and advertising company and owner of such properties as The Huffington Post.

2. GeoCities

GeoCities was originally founded as a web hosting service that let users create communities of homepages on like-minded topics. The pages were hosted by specific ?cities? ? for example, ?Silicon Valley? (computers/electronics) or ?Hollywood? (Entertainment).

Near its peak, GeoCities was acquired by Yahoo for $3 billion. New copyright rules upset members and some left in protest. Among other issues, Yahoo was unable to make the site profitable and it was shut down in 2009.

3. SixDegrees.com

SixDegrees.com, named after the six degrees of separation concept, was one of the first social networking sites to exist. Users list friends and family, invite external contacts to join, then see if there were connections with other users on the site.

At its peak, SixDegrees.com had 1 million members and partnered with NADP. The site simply wasn?t profitable at the time, and shut down in 2001. It has since been revived, but is only open to former members and those who get an invite.

4. Friendster

Friendster was once considered the top online social network. It allowed users to connect, communicate and share online content with other members. Within a few months of launching, it had more than 3 million users.

During Friendster?s peak in 2003, Google offered founder Jonathan Abrams $30 million, however he chose to be funded by Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers and Benchmark Capital. The decline is considered one of the biggest blunders in the history of Silicon Valley. The site could hardly keep up with demand, and had trouble serving web pages. It was eclipsed by MySpace in 2004.

Friendster shifted in 2011 to focus on its expansion in Asia, and is now a social gaming site. Today, more than 90% of new users are based in Asia, and monthly users have increased by 50%.

5. MySpace

In 2003, Tom Anderson, Chris DeWolf and a few other Friendster users saw potential in the site, but felt it was lacking infrastructure. The MySpace team and its resources were supported by eUniverse. The new platform had the programmers it needed as it rapidly grew in popularity.

By 2006, MySpace was bought by NewsCorp for $580 million and had 100 million accounts. It peaked in 2007 when it was considered the leading social networking site, valued at $12 billion.

The site?s downfall began in 2008, when Facebook eventually caught up and overtook the Alexa ratings. Among other issues, Myspace struggled with a decline in ad revenue, failure to innovate and Facebook?s expansive membership to users under 18. The downfall accelerated in 2009, when it lost millions of followers monthly.

MySpace was bought for $35 million by advertising network Specific Media, and Justin Timberlake took ownership stake. Recently, Timberlake introduced MySpace TV. The site gained a million new followers in February 2012.

6. Second Life

Second Life?s online virtual world was developed in 2003 by Linden Lab. The service enables users to interact with others, create and trade virtual property, and participate in jobs and activities through an avatar. As of 2011, there were 1 million active users on the site.

Though Second Life was not necessarily a direct competitor to Facebook, the site became so popular that people made a living through their avatar. Some quit their jobs and others felt happier in a virtual life instead of reality.

Due to Second Life?s rapid growth rate, its servers struggled with instability. Eventual changes to the terms of service in order to comply with various international laws regulated or banned many Second Life businesses that once thrived.

7. Orkut

Orkut was quietly designed by Google in 2004. The social networking site was originally hosted in California, but today it is one of the most popular social networks in Brazil.

The site intended to help users connect with new and familiar people. It became popular in Brazil, India and Estonia ? until 2010, when many users in Estonia and India switched over to Facebook.

Due to its prominence in Brazil, as well as its legal issues, the company moved its operation and management there to continue business. Today there are 66 million users on orkut.

epiphany exorcism jersey shore season 5 mark driscoll unemployment rate unemployment rate jesse ventura
motryucohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768737961051693656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1456234251010720488.post-35438906419667411042012-05-18T09:08:00.001-07:002012-05-18T09:08:21.871-07:00The Electronics Lab Hidden in a Kitchen Pantry [Where The Magic Happens]

You might not have heard of Ken Murphy, but you are probably familiar with his work. Fans are mourning the loss of one of the greats, a real pioneer, whose innovative use of synthesized backing tracks blazed the path for the dance music we are all so familiar with today.

Hers are some of the most memorable disco songs ever recorded, and her impact on music is almost too large to quantify with words, but for Summer herself, it was all about the voice.

"Music is part of my life. For my judgment, music is the greatest of all the gifts," Summer told MTV News' John Norris in a rare 1989 interview. "The voice — not my voice, but the voice — to me is the greatest gift. Having a voice. You need no other instrument, all you have to do is sing. Open your mouth, and there it is."

Because her sound was so rooted in the mechanics of disco, with its glittering synths and pulsating beats, some people don't know that the five-time Grammy winner was also an amazingly accomplished vocalist. Her mezzo-soprano voice transcends even the genre she pioneered. Before she became the Queen of Disco, she sang gospel in church and in her early 20s moved to Europe, where she performed in musicals like "Godspell" and "Showboat" and joined the Viennese Folk Opera.

"When I hear other people singing, I think, 'God, it's great, it's a great gift, what a great gift,' " Summer told MTV News. "And probably one of the gifts that people want the most is to be able to sing, and for obvious reasons — it's soothing, it's stimulating, it's encouraging, it's sad, it covers every spectrum of emotion."

It was a gift she was lucky enough to have and good enough to share with the world — one that brought her 14 top 10 hits and four #1's.

"There's no better way to get into those crevasses, those cracks in somebody's personality and root out the real person but through singing," Summer continued. "Sometimes you can't communicate in words, but in a song, you can."

Share your condolences for Donna Summer's friends, family and fans in the comments or on Facebook.

Related Videos

Donna Summer: 1948 - 2012

Related Photos

Donna Summer: The Queen Of Disco

Related Artists

Donna Summer

madonna superbowl halftime ufc 143 results kickoff time super bowl 2012 superbowl national anthem patriots vs giants super bowl superbowl halftime show
motryucohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768737961051693656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1456234251010720488.post-79652446819252305562012-05-18T04:52:00.001-07:002012-05-18T04:52:33.920-07:00Electrical Tip: Automatic Switch Options - Article :: Networx
One of the biggest causes of excessive energy use in homes comes from the amount of electrical equipment, lighting, and electronics we have, and how often it is left on when not needed.?

?

Starting with lights, we often turn them on when we walk into rooms, even if there is enough light to see without them.? On top of that, they are too often left on when not needed.? If no one is in a room, then there isn?t much point in having a light on.? A little lighting here and there for security ? to make intruders think you are at home and to have enough light so you don?t trip over something or fall down a flight of stairs is fine, but don?t leave on so many lights that someone walking down the street thinks that you?re filming a movie in your house.?

?

If you have the old, soon to be discontinued, incandescent light bulbs, they product a lot of heat (about 90% of their energy is heat and only 10% is light), so in the summer, lights left on heat up your house, requiring more air conditioning to keep it cool.??

?

If everyone was just responsible and turned things off, we wouldn?t need to worry much, but we are a lazy bunch and, apparently, we need help operating light switches.? That is where occupancy controls come in.? There are many devices available that will control lights, fans, and electronic equipment, turning it off automatically when it isn?t needed, saving energy in the process.?

?

The most basic occupancy sensors turn on lights when someone enters a room, turning them off automatically a pre-set amount of time after they exit.? These sensors use a combination of motion detection and heat sensing technology so the lights don?t go off if you are sitting and quietly reading.? The sensitivity is adjustable so things don?t turn on every time your kitty walks through the room.?

?

Although occupancy sensors do work well, a better solution is what is known as a manual on sensor.? This type of switch requires someone to manually turn on the light, then turns it off automatically after they leave.? The good thing about this type of switch is that it doesn?t turn lights on when you don?t need them.? During the day, many rooms have enough light for someone to walk through or get something they need without turning on a light, and manual on sensors save energy by not automatically turning lights on when not needed.? Occupancy sensors can also be used on ceiling fans which are often left on after people leave the room, wasting more energy.

?

Electronics are big energy hogs, and most of them are in the on position all the time, usually just so we can turn them on using the remote control.? TVs, DVD players and audio equipment use power in the standby mode, so disconnecting the power when you?re not using them is another good energy saving strategy.? You probably don?t want to turn off your DVR or cable box, because you won?t record that episode of "Mad Men" that you missed, but the other stuff is fine.?

?

If you?re building or renovating, you can put in what is known as a ?kill switch,? a regular switch that controls a set of receptacles that you can plug in all the things that you can turn off.? When you?re not watching, just flip the switch and watch the energy savings on your fancy energy monitor (if you have one).? When you?re ready to watch TV, just turn the switch on, sit back, and flip through the channels with your remote.?

?

For simpler setups, you can have a regular old power strip, one with a remote control, or something known as a "smart strip".? Smart strips have a special receptacle that senses when the main piece of equipment (like a TV or computer) is turned off.? It then cuts the power to other receptacles in the power strip, saving energy by turning off your DVD player, printer, monitor, or other equipment that you don?t need to be on.?

?

If you?re looking for something simple, you could use timer switches, kind of like the ones they used to have in college libraries.? Turn them on for a set amount of time and they automatically turn off when done.? This many not be your preference, but they do work well on bath fans, keeping them on long enough to exhaust the moisture but keeping you from leaving them on all day.? You can get timers that run up to eight hours ? these are great for ceiling fans you like to have on at night to keep you cool in bed. You don?t have to worry about turning them off in the morning so they don?t run all day.

?

Finally, if you?re willing to be a responsible adult, you can just use regular old switches and train yourself to only turn things on when you need them and turn them off when you?re done.? I know that?s kind of tough, but how much effort does it really take?

?

Green building consultant Carl Seville works with electricians in Atlanta to address issues like these. That extra BBC Sport coverage that's planned for summer, and available as a TiVo app, will also be coming to UK owners of Bravia TVs (2011 and onwards,) PS3s, and even some Blu-ray players (at a later date). Those 24 channels of HD Olympic action will be translated into live streams, and there will be the usual array of catch-up options too. It's not just the Olympics, either, with most of the Beeb's sports coverage set to be available through the app, along with much of the additional content that was previously dealt with by the Red Button. Sony claims it has worked with the BBC to develop the app, and should be the first to launch it direct on TVs just in time for Wimbledon. It will likely find its way to other Smart TVs too, but no details on which at this time.

BBC Sport app brings Olympics and more to Sony Bravia TVs, PlayStation 3 and Blu-ray players originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 May 2012 13:59:00 EDT. When asked Monday about the president's self-described evolution on the issue, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, "I can tell you that I'm sure it is the case that he will be asked again at some point when he gives interviews or press conferences about this issue, and I'll leave it to him to describe his personal views."

With his "evolving" stance on same-sex marriage in the spotlight, here's a look back at the various positions he has held on the issue: from appearing to support the unions as a young state senate candidate, opposing them outright as a matter of faith in 2004, to suggesting a shift in line with public opinion:

FEBRUARY 1996:??? "I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages," reads a typed, signed statement from then-Illinois state senate candidate Obama in response to a questionnaire by the Chicago LGBT newspaper "Outlines."?? White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer later publicly disavowed the statement, claiming in June 2011 that the questionnaire was "actually filled out by someone else."

OCTOBER 2004:? " What I believe is that marriage is between a man and a woman ? What I believe, in my faith, is that a man and a woman, when they get married, are performing something before God, and it's not simply the two persons who are meeting," then-U.S. Senate candidate Obama said in an interview with WTTW Chicago public television.

"That doesn't mean that that necessarily translates into a position on public policy or with respect to civil unions. What it does mean is that we have a set of traditions in place that, I think, need to be preserved, but I also think we need to make sure that gays and lesbians have the same set of basic rights that are in place.

"I don't think marriage is a civil right," Obama said when asked whether there's an inherent right to marry.

OCTOBER 2010:?? " I have been to this point unwilling to sign on to same-sex marriage primarily because of my understandings of the traditional definitions of marriage," President Obama said during an interview with liberal bloggers. "But I also think you're right that attitudes evolve, including mine. And I think that it is an issue that I wrestle with and think about because I have a whole host of friends who are in gay partnerships."

DECEMBER 2010:?? " My feelings about this are constantly evolving. I struggle with this. At this point, what I've said is, is that my baseline is a strong civil union that provides them the protections and the legal rights that married couples have," Obama said in response to a question from ABC's Jake Tapper at a White House press conference.

"I recognize that from their perspective it is not enough, and I think is something that we're going to continue to debate and I personally am going to continue to wrestle with going forward," he said.

JUNE 2011:? " The president has never favored same-sex marriage. He is against it. The country is evolving on this, and he is evolving on it," Pfeiffer told progressive activists at the Net Roots Nation conference.

JUNE 2011:? " I think it's important for us to work through these issues because each community is going to be different, each state is going to be different," Obama said when asked during a White House press conference about New York becoming the latest state to legalize same-sex marriage.

"I think what you're seeing is a profound recognition on the part of the American people that gays and lesbians and transgender persons are our brothers, our sisters, our children, our cousins, our friends, our co-workers, and that they've got to be treated like every other American," he said. "And I think that principle will win out. It's not going to be perfectly smooth, and it turns out that the President - I've discovered since I've been in this office - can't dictate precisely how this process moves."

OCTOBER 2011:? "I'm still working on it," Obama said when asked by ABC's George Stephanopoulos whether he would move from supporting civil unions for same-sex couples to supporting gay marriage.

"I probably won't make news right now, George. But I think that there's no doubt that as I see friends, families children of gay couples who are thriving, you know, that has an impact on how I think about these issues."

mitt romney cinnamon challenge lou dobbs rock salt david letterman march of dimes james randi
motryucohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768737961051693656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1456234251010720488.post-11580305943122513782012-05-11T01:28:00.001-07:002012-05-11T01:28:16.287-07:00Twitter Acquires Personalized Email Marketing Provider RestEngineTwitter has just finalized a deal to acquire RestEngine, a developer of personalized email marketing services, which could help Twitter deliver email digests of great tweets you've missed. The acquisition fits well with Twitter's recent talent acquisition of Summify, which creates these kinds of personal news digests. The boostrapped RestEngine had spent the last few years generating and distributing re-engagement emails for social game companies like Crowdstar. The emails often enticed users to start playing again by telling them what their friends had been accomplishing in the game. Three of four founders will be joining the flock, and the company's technology will come along with them. Co-founder Joe Waltman won't be moving to Twitter, though, as he tells me his entrepreneurial spirit is too strong and he'll be working on new projects after a vacation. Waltman tells me RestEngine will shut down, and has already begun helping clients migrate to other email providers.
snow white and the huntsman snow white and the huntsman peyton manning rupaul drag race walking dead comic kratom broncos
motryucohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768737961051693656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1456234251010720488.post-18594768665436651182012-05-10T23:18:00.001-07:002012-05-10T23:18:36.859-07:00HP t410 AIO Smart Zero Client does single-wire Power over Ethernet, no power cord required

Now, we don't normally cover this sort of networking equipment, but we were quite impressed by HP's new t410 All-in-One Smart Zero Client after we spoke to its proud product manager Walt Jurek. First of all, this isn't an AIO desktop PC, nor is it an LCD monitor -- well, if you're unfamiliar with thin clients, just think of this as an 18.5-inch, 1,366 x 768 LED-backlit monitor (featuring a 3M technology for the 200 nit brightness -- our money's on the Uniformity Tape) that uses just one Ethernet cable to get both its 13W power from a PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch, as well as data connection over Citrix, Microsoft or VMWare protocol. The t410 can automatically detect the virtualization environment and then reprogram its digital signal processor when needed, meaning less manual work for the admin (in theory, anyway). More after the break.

Gallery: HP t410 All-in-One Smart Zero Client

Continue reading HP t410 AIO Smart Zero Client does single-wire Power over Ethernet, no power cord required

HP t410 AIO Smart Zero Client does single-wire Power over Ethernet, no power cord required originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 10 May 2012 15:41:00 EDT. In this segment, I?ll take that idea a bit further by discussing some specific comments contractors submitted to a survey. This survey was conducted by Steve Coscia who is the author of a book on soft skills for technicians, and also provides training materials on the subject for schools and colleges. The focus of the survey was on the kind of job that HVACR training programs have been doing in the opinion of contractors.

In the survey, I counted 185 total responses, and found the following:

60 of those responding said that schools needed to spend more time on training in soft skills. Some of these references mentioned communication skills specifically, and others referred specifically to sales skills. From my view, the bottom line on all of these responses could be listed under the label of ?People Skills?, or ?Customer Service Skills?, or ?Professionalism?.

34 of those responding said that graduates needed more hands-on training during their training programs so they would be more ready to function in the ?real world? of HVACR servicing.

7 of those responding said that the schools needed to make sure that graduates would be realistic in their understanding of what they would earn on their first job. The general consensus among these respondents was that schools sometimes over-inflate what a graduate would earn in order to convince them to enroll in the training program.

The balance of the responses were more general in nature, so I?m going to concentrate only on the ones I?ve listed above.

Just in case you missed it?.note that more contractors were concerned about customer service and people skills training than anything else. What this says is that while technical skills are important for HVACR technicians, it?s just as important that a technician visiting a customer?s home or place of business is professional, and has the ability to communicate well with the customer and leave them with the feeling that they made the right choice in choosing their service contractor.

Regarding the unrealistic expectations of graduates, I hold schools responsible if they turn out a graduate who doesn?t understand that even through have have completed a six-month, one-year training program, or two-year degree program, that they are still an entry-level technician. And, as an entry level technician, one simply cannot expect to be earning journeyman level wages right out of the gate.

On the more hands-on issue?.in my opinion, there?s only just so much a school can do. There?s simply no way to cover the aspects of all the specific troubleshooting and service situations a technician may encounter in the field, so some of this may be an unrealistic expectation on the part of the contractor. On the other hand, if a school doesn?t provide the right learning opportunities, then it is a valid complaint.

There were a few other comments in the survey that I want to mention: (I?ve listed them here without any editing for grammar, punctuation, etc?)

?Finishing a trade school is only the beginning of there education??? On this one, I whole-heartedly agree. Anybody who thinks they don?t have something to learn just about every day in the HVACR service business needs to wake up and smell the coffee, because that?s how it is.

?Make SURE that the student learns a process to diagnose HVAC systems or he is only going to be qualified to change filters??. I also agree with this opinion. The graduate who doesn?t understand how to determine the correct operating sequence for a piece of equipment, then be able to find out where the problem in the sequence is, won?t be able to function fully as a troubleshooter.

?Eliminate the personal opinions of teachers who could not make it in the real world??.. I hear this comment from time to time from those who work in the HVACR field, and usually, the profile of the individual who would say this is one who had no, or very little, opportunity for formal training, and they are intimidated by anyone else who either has field experience along with the skill to teach HVACR, or a graduate who has completed a certificate or degree program. Of course, there could be exceptions to this profile?..

Learn from yesterday?..Live for today??Look forward to tomorrow

More Trade School Graduate Articles

Related posts:

Learning HVACR Part 9 Learning HVACR Part 9 In previous articles on this subject...

Related posts brought to you by Yet Another Related Posts Plugin.

Tagged as: HVACR, Learning, part

kola boof burmese python national signing day ferris bueller god bless america earned income credit super bowl commercials
motryucohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768737961051693656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1456234251010720488.post-67869142490667819892012-05-08T22:25:00.003-07:002012-05-08T22:25:52.683-07:00The Engadget interview: Mozilla Chief of Innovation Todd Simpson at CTIA 2012 (video)

Today at CTIA Wireless in New Orleans we got the chance to spend a few minutes with Todd Simpson, Chief of Innovation at Mozilla. It's time to streamline, and the crew at Scosche have a rather nice solution. The company is taking the wraps off of its Revolt H4 USB charger, which offers four 10W (2.1A) USB ports that'll properly (and quickly) reinvigorate up to four smartphones or tablets simultaneously. Sure, it's nothing like the 16 port behemoth of the PowerPad, but this is for home use, and we can't deny -- it's quite the temptress. Consumers may choose between the base model or the Revolt H4 Pro, which offers a micro-USB cable along with an adapter for Apple's dock connector. As another product of interest, Scosche is similarly introducing its 2.1 amp Recoil II car charger, which allows users to cut down on the clutter with its retractable cable while also quickly juicing up a single iOS device -- just hop the break for a peek. Pricing isn't yet available for either, but keep your eye on Scosche's website for the official word. For other charging solutions, you'll find the full PR after the break.

Continue reading Scosche debuts Revolt H4, a four-port, 10W USB charger at CTIA Wireless

Scosche debuts Revolt H4, a four-port, 10W USB charger at CTIA Wireless originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 07 May 2012 07:00:00 EDT. (Remember that impossibly cheap PMP?) Its just-announced Android 4.0 slate, the eGlide XL Pro 2, may not be a "standout device" as the outfit proclaims, but it does look and act like a tablet -- for a Walmart-friendly $220. The 10-inch Pro 2 runs a 1GHz processor and a 400MHz GPU with 4GB of storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD card), and it isn't penny-pinching to the point of forgoing an HDMI connection. While it lacks Google services such as access to the Play market, the eGlide XL cushions its pre-load with the Ematic App Shop, a voice assistant and the Kobo eReader app. If you're in the market for any old tablet, get more acquainted with the Pro 2 in the presser below.

Continue reading Ematic announces eGlide XL Pro Android 4.0 slate for $220

Ematic announces eGlide XL Pro Android 4.0 slate for $220 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 May 2012 02:46:00 EDT. Of course, Lala finally found its way -- eventually being scooped up by Apple. And now Color, an app that's already lived through its share of lives, has a big name on its side. The company has partnered with none other than Verizon to help soup up its life-streaming service. The two sides have signed an exclusivity deal that promises to harness Big Red's zippy LTE.

The version of the app which will be exclusively available to subscribers of that carrier brings with it some much welcomed upgrades, including sound and a higher frame rate. Color was pretty insistent that such things weren't key to the app's functionality when it first launched, but it has apparently seen the error of its ways. As Nguyen told us, simply, "we were wrong." Now, thanks to Verizon's 4G technology, it's now able to offer up a product closer to an ideal streaming situation -- a scenario Nguyen apparently decided upon after playing around with a Red camera at CES. The dream now is live HD streaming. More after the break.

Continue reading Color announces Verizon partnership, preaches the dream of streaming HD

Color announces Verizon partnership, preaches the dream of streaming HD originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 07 May 2012 11:12:00 EDT. A recent study suggests the problem may be worsening faster than previously believed.
But a multibillion-dollar system to be implemented starting next year could help prevent major flooding, according to two engineers who presented the project yesterday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Mass.

According to scientists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, the University of Miami, and Tele-Rilevamento Europa, an Italian company specializing in ground deformation measurement, the lagoon city is sinking, and won?t stop any time soon.

The team, who published their findings in the March issue of Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, a journal of the American Geophysical Union, combined GPS and space-borne radar information on the lagoon over the past 10 years and came to the conclusion that the city is sinking about two millimeters (0.08 inches) per year. This contradicts previous studies, according to which Venice?s land subsidence, the scientific term that refers to its slow sinking into the waters, had stopped after the city discontinued groundwater pumping in the 1990s, as reported by the Italian newspaper Il Gazzettino.

?It?s a small effect, but it?s important,? lead author Yehuda Bock said in a press release.

In 20 years, the study says, 80 millimeters (3.2 inches) of the lagoon will be taken over by the sea. But that is not the only thing Venetians should be worried about: The city is also tilting eastward, a problem the authors of the research say wasn?t detected in other studies.

So, is Venice doomed? ?Perhaps not. First of all, some question the study?s methodological approach. Pierpaolo Campostrini, director of Corila, a Venice-based research center that studies the lagoon, told Italian daily Corriere della Sera that subsidence may not be constant. ?It could accelerate or slow down,? he said.

Then there is Mose, a complex 5 billion euro ($6.5 billion) flood-prevention system part of which will be operational in 2013 ? 10 years after the project, one of Italy's largest public works, first began. Mose engineers Maria Teresa Brotto and Giovanni Cecconi were at MIT yesterday to present the project, which MIT faculty helped to develop. Mose?s four barriers, placed in the water at the lagoon?s inlets, are designed to rise with the water level, thus protecting the lagoon from flooding.

The goal, Mr. Cecconi said, is ?to keep the water level under 100 centimeters [3.28 feet]? in the city. Critics of the project, however, are concerned about its environmental impact and its maintenance costs, which Ms. Brotto said will amount to 15 to 20 million euros per year.

bcs jay z glory alabama crimson tide barry larkin jay z new song torrie wilson alabama lsu
motryucohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768737961051693656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1456234251010720488.post-65637143277606798902012-05-07T00:59:00.001-07:002012-05-07T00:59:27.368-07:00Rubio Dodges Veep Talk (TIME)
Share With Friends: <img src="http://cache.addthiscdn.com/icons/v1/thumbs/facebook.gif" border="0" width="16" height="16" alt="Share on Facebook" style="border:0;
