Oprah's Final Show: Nate Berkus Gives the Scoop

Oprah's Final Show: Nate Berkus Gives the Scoop

Oprah Winfrey is many things. Intelligent? Yes. Relatable? Yep. Generous? You bet. But hilarious? According to her longtime friend Nate Berkus, the daytime talk-show doyenne knows how to deliver a punchline.

"That’s one of the little-known things about Oprah," the design guru tells iVillage. "She’s always the funniest person in the room, no matter who else is at the table."

Berkus, 39, got his TV start as a regular guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show more than ten years ago. And as the Winfrey's 25-year reign comes to end (with her final episode airing May 25), the interior designer -- who now hosts The Nate Berkus Show -- reflects back on the woman who helped make his own dreams come true.

How do you feel about The Oprah Winfrey Show coming to an end?

I think it's the right time, but it's very bittersweet for me. I feel like Harpo has been a family to me.

What was your first impression of Oprah?

Hilarious. I truly thought she was hilarious. That’s one of the little-known things about Oprah. She’s always the funniest person in the room, no matter who else is at the table.

What's the funniest thing she's ever said to you?

It’s not even like that. It’s pretty constant.

Why do you think she's so relatable?

She’s never hidden anything from anyone. She's the exact same person on the screen as she is off the screen. I think it’s her authenticity that really resonated. Because people are smart, and they know when people are telling them the truth. And Oprah has always told the truth. Telling the truth makes you very powerful.

Is there anything about her that's different off camera?

I’m happy that people are watching (her reality show) Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes this year. You see Oprah not on set, not on the show. And I think that’s also a very accurate side to Oprah.

You get to see her as a tough businesswoman, right?

Yeah, and it’s funny and there’s swear words. Like all of us, she’s got many sides.

Do you ever think she's intimidating?

No, I don’t find Oprah to be intimidating, but I think there's a respect that's there because of her life experience and her knowledge and willingness and openness to new things. She deserves a lot of respect.

What memories from the show stick out in your mind?

When I came back from the tsunami (in the Indian Ocean in 2004, during which he lost his partner), I came on the show to help raise money to rebuild the town where I was. Oprah was just staring at me without saying anything when I was speaking. And I could just feel her empathy in that moment.

What's the best advice she's ever given you?

Always listen to my inner guide. No matter what the stakes, no matter who’s telling me different, no matter what anyone’s saying will be the backlash. Always trust my inner voice.

Has she given you advice about hosting your own show?

Of course, yeah. But the mistake that a lot of people make with Oprah is that they think she has the answers for them. A lot of people think, "Well, it’s Oprah, so she’ll know exactly what I should do." But she’s taught me that you need to figure out what feels right for you. No one else can tell you what the right choices for you are. And that’s also been a big part of The Oprah Winfrey Show. The way she’s presented information for the past 25 years has not been "do this" or "eat that." It's been, "This is something that I’ve found that I'd like to share with you, and you can make your mind up how you see fit."

How has she changed your life?

Well, one, she’s a dear friend. And two, I think that she allowed me to be one of the very, very lucky people who get to do what they love to do. I take my passion and share it with millions of people. And I don’t know what’s better than that.

Do you have a favorite episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show?

Wow, there really were so many for me that resonated. I love the one where they had men who had been abused. I thought that was incredible. And I really loved all the opportunities that I had to be that guy who rings the doorbell and somebody knows as soon as they see me that things are changing -- and they’re changing for the better.

What does that feel like?

It’s amazing. It's making a difference in people’s lives, and that’s what I hope to do with my own show.

Oprah recently gave you a tour of her home on your show. Did anything surprise you about her house?

One of my philosophies for a long time has been that people really deserve to love the way they live. Our homes should really be a space, at any price, that we feel a sense of peace and a sense of connection with. The depth to which Oprah feels that about her home is something that made me really happy.

Do you have any inside info on what viewers can expect from Oprah's final show?

Nope! Unfortunately, I cannot tell you that. It’ll be spectacular, though!

Review Your Wood for Pest Control Needs

Termites can devour the wood in your home. This can include the supports to your home. This can not only make your home unsafe but also less valuable because of the damages that the termites are causing to your property. You will need to ensure that you are getting your home treated with the right pest control plans if you want to keep it safe. The first pest control process that you will need to handle involves inspecting your home.

First, you might want to take a look at any holes that are in any wooden materials around your home. Sometimes a home might feature some holes in hidden spots around your walls. These holes might be easier to find but in some cases they may be covered up by your walls.

You can tell your wooden areas are being impacted by termites if the walls are not as thick as some other areas in your home.

Also, termites can have impacted your walls if they appear to be slightly discolored. Sometimes these discolorations might be signs that your home is under attack by a series of termites. This can be a real risk that you should be aware of if you want to get your home treated and protected from termites.

One key point for pest control involves looking into the specifics of the holes in wood. You can tell that your home is under attack by termites if the softer areas of the wood are the areas that have been devoured. The problem is that termites tend to keep the annual rights in your wood around and will only go after the soft parts. This is especially critical if your wood is in a humid area of your house.

You will need to also take a look at the insects that might be around your termites.

Sometimes you might find some slender tunnels around your wood. These are tunnels that are perfect for termites to fit into. Termites tend to easily sneak their ways into smaller parts of your wood by crawling through individual areas and getting into your wood fibers. These are concerns that can impact your wood and keep it from being as durable as it should be.

These are all points to use for pest control when it comes to termites. You will need to review your wood to determine if it is dealing with any problems and if it needs to be treated in some way. You should ensure that your wood is being handled as well as possible if you want to keep it from being harmed by termites. Checking on the condition of your wood and other areas of your home can help you to see if termites have impacted these spots.

Before I Sell My Structured Settlement for Cash, I Want to ...

During the past, and in many instances today, if a personal injury case is settled, the plaintiff often receives an one-time very large sum settlement payment from the defendant. After the plaintiff receives this payment, it really is up to her or him what to do with the amount of money, what things to spend the funds on, if anything, and how much, if any, to save for future security and opportunities. This kind of budgeting can be hard. One should anticipate future expenses as well as map out just what objectives they?ll wish to obtain at some point along with the costs of reaching those goals.

One of the purposes of a structured settlement, in part, is to avoid the issues that might develop with budgeting errors. As the term suggests, a structured settlement is a ?settlement? and for that reason usually arises, not by a court order or ruling, but through an contract; i.e., settlement involving the parties to the lawsuit. It?s in essence, a legal contract involving the parties to the lawsuit whereby the plaintiff consents to dismissing his or her pending court action in exchange for the defendant agreeing to make a fixed set of future payments. By and large, you agree to accept the structure and any cash at the time of the settlement and release the Defendant and its Insurer from all past or future claims. In most cases, and not all, the court is not a part of the negotiation or approval of the ultimate settlement.

Regularly, as soon as the structured settlement is agreed to, an annuity is acquired to finance the obligation. The Defendant, its insurance company or even a related entity, will often be the one responsible to obtain the annuity. While in many situations, you won?t need to be the legal owner of the annuity funding the structured settlement, the settlement arrangement will require the that owner has the annuity payments sent directly to you.

While the laws in most state vary as also does the language in the underlying settlement and annuity contract, you may be entitled to receive the structured payments, but not be the named owner of the annuity. Because of this, there could be technical issues in the event you want to sell all or part of your structured settlement payments.

Nevertheless, due to relatively recent legislation, you will discover companies these days that can provide a lump sum of cash for your structured settlement payments. In light of the specialized and legal knowledge needed to effectuate this kind of transaction to provide you a lump sum payment of cash, if you elect to sell your payments, it?s critical you end up picking a business with plenty of experience in this area. Their knowledge will make sure the entire process of selling your structured settlement goes smoothly so you receive the cash fairly quickly.

Before boating, be prepared & safe! : News : CNYcentral.com

This week is?National Safe Boating Week. Beautiful weather can make for an enjoyable boating experience, although the sudden emergence of threatening thunderstorm clouds, gusty winds, and lightning can turn a day?s pleasure into a time of distress. During National Safe Boating Week, you will be able to check out tips prepared from the National Safe Boating Council on how to keep your pleasure and safety to a maximum.? Here is a direct transcription the topics that are discussed through the week.??

Weather Briefing
Few people are affected more often by weather than the mariner. An unexpected change in winds, seas, visibility or the sudden development of a thunderstorm can turn a pleasant afternoon into one which threatens the safety of a vessel and its crew. The National Weather Service, as well as CNYcentral provides marine weather warnings and forecasts serving mariners who use the waters both for their livelihood or recreation, including those traversing our near-shore waters to those heading across our lakes.

The National Weather Service and CNYcentral provides updated and accurate weather information in various formats - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week every day of the year. Before setting out, obtain the latest marine forecast and warnings.? Several days ahead of time you can begin listening for extended outlooks which give general information out to the next five days.

Take particular note of any current advisories and warnings, including Small Craft Advisories, Gale or Storm Warnings which alert mariners to either high winds or waves occurring now or forecast to occur up to 24 hours from now. Also, pay attention to any Watches which forecast possible rough weather expected in the upcoming few days

Here are some radio tips. If you have a marine VHF transceiver with built-in NOAA Weather Radio channels, use them. If your VHF radio is not equipped with weather channels, you may want to buy a VHF weather radio--they?re readily available and low in cost. If you venture beyond about a 40nm range from shore, you should consider buying a good quality HF single sideband transceiver. Remember to always file a float plan with someone ashore and consider the purchase of an Emergency Position Indicating Radiobeacon or EPIRB. These devices are designed to save your life if you get into trouble by alerting rescue authorities and indicating your location.

Life Jackets?
Before you and your family get out on the water this year, grab a life jacket and ?Wear It!? Nearly 90 percent of those who drown while boating were not wearing a life jacket.? Life jacket wear is one of the most effective and simple life-saving strategies for safe recreational boating. Boaters are required to have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on board for every passenger on their vessel.? Today?s life jackets are available in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. They are comfortable, lightweight, and perfect for any boating activity or sport.? No matter what the activity or life jacket style chosen, the most important thing is this: remember to grab a life jacket and ?Wear It!?

Lightning Safety
Each year 100,000 thunderstorms develop across the United States and adjacent maritime areas. These thunderstorms produce millions of lightning strikes that pose a significant threat to boaters. Lightning can generate a phenomenal amount of heat that can vaporize water, melt metal, or cause objects to explode. In fact, bolts of lightning can produce extreme temperatures that are 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun!

A lightning strike to a vessel can be catastrophic, especially if it results in a fire or loss of electronics. The best action you can take the second you see lightning or hear thunder is to head to shore and take shelter until the storm passes. If you must weather the storm on the water, drop anchor so the boat?s bow points into the wind. If your boat has a cabin, then stay inside and avoid touching metal or electrical devices. If your boat doesn?t have a cabin, stay as low as you can in the boat. In addition, make sure you and your crew are wearing life jackets. To protect your boat, make sure it is grounded. Use a good conductive material to allow the current to travel through and off the boat through a discharge plate or the keel.? Ultimately, remember that boating safety begins ashore with planning and training. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards for the latest forecast and warning information.

Vessel Safety Checks
This boating season, make sure that you take advantage of the Vessel Safety Check (VSC), program ? a free, no risk, service provided in your area by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the US Power Squadrons. A qualified vessel examiner will conduct an inspection of all the required safety equipment carried or installed on a vessel and certain aspects of the vessel?s overall condition. Even if you pay careful attention to safety, dangerous mechanical problems can crop up on the best-maintained boat. That's why the U.S. Coast Guard recommends that all recreational boats (including personal watercraft) get a free VSC each year.

A VSC is your best way of learning about conditions that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or, worse, create an unsafe condition for you or your passengers on the water.

Be prepared for any emergency when you are afloat. Get a free vessel safety check to ensure that your vessel complies with both Federal and State requirements. If the vessel meets all requirements, the examiner will award a Vessel Safety Check decal. If your vessel fails to receive a VSC decal, no law enforcement action is taken and the examiner will provide a list of items for correction.

Dangerous Waves
Each year boaters encounter waves that cause significant damage to their vessels, or result in a sinking and loss of life. To keep safe boaters need to understand how waves are formed, when they can become steep, and the type of wave conditions that their vessels can handle.

Wind creates waves and they are influenced by the size and duration of the wind fetch. Waves generated locally are called wind waves, and those that are generated at a distant fetch are called swells. These waves are further modified by currents, refraction, and shoaling. Ultimately, steep waves create many problems for boaters of all shapes and sizes. Steep waves are those with wave heights that are nearly equal to their wave period. Steep waves create hazardous navigation conditions that can be compounded by tidal currents near bars, inlets, or port entrances.

When waves are expected to become large or steep, boaters should strongly consider remaining in port until conditions improve. If you encounter steep or large waves, point the bow of the boat into the waves. Never ride parallel to the waves during these conditions so that your vessel does not overturn. Always make sure that you and your crew are wearing properly fitted and U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets.

Boating Under The Influence
The effects of alcohol can be even more hazardous on the water than on land. Boating Under the Influence, or BUI, affects judgment, vision, balance and coordination. These impairments can increase the risk of being involved in a boating accident ? for both passengers and boat operators. Alcohol is a contributing factor in about a third of all recreational boating fatalities.

It is illegal to operate any boat or watercraft while under the influence of alcohol or drugs in every state. Penalties can include fines, suspension or revocation of your drivers license and even jail time. Every boater needs to understand the risks of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Navigation Rules
Do you know what to do when approaching, meeting or over taking another boat? Before you take your boat out on the water this season, it?s important that you know the ?nautical rules of the road.?

The nautical rules of the road are the navigation rules for preventing collisions on the water. Knowing the nautical rules of the road is important for all boaters. Knowing what to do when meeting, crossing or over taking another boat can prevent costly damage to your boat, personal injury or even loss of life. Whenever you believe there is a risk of collision you should slow down, stop or steer away from the situation as described in the navigation rules. Maintaining a proper lookout and a safe speed are all a part of the navigation rules and should be an important part of your boat operation.

Take some time to learn the nautical rules of the road this summer and ensure safer boating for you, your family, and the other boaters on the water.

Not everyone's a fan of Russell Brand!

The 35-year-old actor was deported from Japan on Saturday.

PHOTOS: Katy and Russell's romance

"So? my husband just got deported from Japan," Katy Perry wrote on Twitter. "I am so sad. I brought him all this way to show him my favorite place. Tokyo dreams crushed."

So why was Brand taken into custody and subsequently kicked out of the country? "It was for priors from over 10 years ago!" Perry, 26, explained.?

PHOTOS: Katy's crazy cleavage!

But Brand didn't lose his sense of humor.

"Planning escape from Japanese custody," the Get Him to the Greek star quipped. "It's bloody hard to dig a tunnel with a chopstick."

"Stockholm syndrome [is] kicking in," he added. "Just asked my guard out for (vegetarian) sushi. He giggled."

PHOTOS: Katy's wacky wardrobe

Perry added: "But of course I love my Japanese fans and the show must go on, no matter the daily aftershocks or husband kidnappings! It's not right but it's okay."
