The Sport of Sailing

Historical evidences and past studies show that sailing has been an essential player in the advance and development of civilization. Early men sailed to travel and explore different places, sell goods, catch fish, and even go to war. Aside from these activities, sailing today is also considered as a form of sport and leisure activity. Technological inventions and discoveries played a great role in making sailing what it is today ? safer, easier, and more convenient. Modern marine electronic tools such as fish finders, Raymarine GPS, autopilot, and radars, among others, are used in sailing and navigation. These state-of-the-art marine gadgets are considered to be crucial instruments in ensuring sea safety.

The sport of sailing (or yachting until 1996) has been present since the 1890s. It has been one of the many sports in the Olympics since the Games of the I Olympiad were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. However, although sailing is included in the program schedule, the racing competition was cancelled then due to harsh weather conditions. It finally made its debut in the 1900 Olympic Games. But then again, sailing competition was not included the 1904 Olympics due to a couple of reasons. Aside from these two incidents, sailing has been included in other Olympics in the succeeding years.

If you are a fan of the sport or you compete regularly in sailing competitions, you are most likely aware of the ISAF or International Sailing Federation. International Olympic Committee recognizes ISAF as the worldwide administrating organization for the sport of sailing. It was formerly called International Yacht Racing Union, or IYRU, established in Paris, France in the year 1907. Several authorities in the sports then gathered and met up to establish a unified set of rules for the sport.

Because of the many forms of equipment and boats used, sailing is considered a diverse form of sport. There are different kinds of sailing competitions derived from the various kinds of boats available. We have kitesurfing, model boat racing, and yacht racing, among others. All of the sailing sport activities are governed by a single set of rules. The Racing Rules of Sailing, or commonly known as RRS, serves as the standard operating rules for every sailing activity. ISAF upgrades and revises the set of rules every four years. The set of rules used today are effective from 2009 until 2012.
