Ryan Gosling: Hollywood Star, Peacemaker & Eligible Bachelor
Late-round fliers could save your fantasy season
Cook continues to fly under the radar because no one seems to know who he is. But Matt Hasselbeck certainly does: "I watched Cook run by this guy, just run by him, and I was like, 'OK Cook can run.' It's nice to know what your tight ends can do. I think the eight ends are really the focal point of any offense." New offensive coordinator Chris Palmer has made similarly raving comments. With uncanny athleticism and two years of experience now under his belt, Cook is a strong bet to have TE1 value before the dust settles. Ace beat writer Jim Wyatt believes Cook will lead the Titans in receptions.
Levitan's complete Flier column
The wildly inconsistent Meachem is finally stringing together health after offseason surgery on his troublesome left ankle. Meanwhile, No. 1 receiver Marques Colston has injury red flags all around him thanks to yet another knee surgery. And with Devery Henderson possibly not making the roster, Meachem stands to at least pick up extra snaps this season. In a best-case scenario, he takes over for Colston and capitalizes on his first-round talent.
Levitan's complete Flier column
The Bears inexplicably handed Knox's starting split end job to Roy Williams. Somewhat predictably, Williams has crashed and burned. But in the meantime, Knox's stock has slipped way under the radar. He added 10 pounds of muscle this offseason and is having a strong camp by all accounts. Once he snags his job back from Williams, Knox will be a steal for savvy owners that have followed the roller coaster.
Levitan's complete Flier column
The foot woes Sanders is dealing with yields a double-edged sword. The bad news is he hasn't been able to establish himself as the No. 3 receiver. The good news is his ADP has sunk to low-flier levels. Even though Antonio Brown has handled himself well with the opportunity, he isn't on the same talent level as Sanders. And Jerricho Cotchery is in the decline phase of an unspectacular career. If and when Hines Ward cliffdives to unplayable levels, Sanders will be the one the Steelers want on the field.
Levitan's complete Flier column
At this point, we are all well aware of Chris Johnson's holdout. Not only is he in danger of missing Week 1, but he could also be more susceptible to muscle strains and pulls upon his return. Ringer has averaged 4.9 yards per carry as a pro. There is standalone value here, even for non-CJ2K owners. Rookie Jamie Harper projects as the mere passing-down back.
Levitan's complete Flier column
6. Michael Crabtree, WR, 49ers - ADP 117.5
For the third straight preseason, Crabtree is not participating. This time, it's due to a left foot injury. Combine that with an apparent lack of chemistry with Alex Smith and we have a well-known, extremely talented guy in the flier zone. It's a chance to take a low-risk gamble on a player that has significant upside if the light switch ever turns on.
7. Jacoby Ford, WR, Raiders - ADP 125.7
Ford shredded the Chiefs for 148 yards in Week 9 last season and then put 108 yards and a touchdown on the Dolphins in Week 12. Now he has the backing of new head coach Hue Jackson as he is listed as a starting wideout. With world-class speed and a few return touchdowns thrown in, the ceiling here is high.
8. Rashad Jennings, RB, Jaguars - ADP 127.2
The concerns over Maurice Jones-Drew's knee have been well documented throughout the offseason. If MJD does go down, Jennings would immediately become an every-down back staring at 18-25 touches per game. He has the talent to do a lot of damage with that kind of workload.
9. Jordy Nelson, WR, Packers - ADP 116.0
Nelson gets the slight nod over James Jones because he is listed directly behind Donald Driver on the official depth chart. Nelson also finished ahead of Jones last season thanks to the latter's brutal drops in big spots. Either way, these two will need an injury to be consistent fantasy plays, especially with Jermichael Finley healthy. That said, Driver's steep decline makes both moderately appealing fliers.
James Jones, WR, Packers - ADP 150.9
Jones is listed behind the younger, better Greg Jennings. Jones, along with Jordy Nelson, will need an injury to be consistent fantasy plays, especially with Jermichael Finley healthy. That said, Driver's steep decline makes both moderately appealing fliers.
11. Stevan Ridley, RB, Patriots - ADP 157.9
Ridley's impressive preseason has him on the radar. In two games, the third-round rookie has racked up 148 rushing yards on 30 carries to go with 10 catches and three total touchdowns. He is way ahead of fellow rookie Shane Vereen and it could be argued that Ridley is simply more talented than starter BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
12. Roy Helu, RB, Redskins - ADP 127.1
Tim Hightower is screaming up draft boards right now as the Redskins' clear starter. But Helu is quietly holding his own, racking up 101 rushing yards on 14 carries and four catches in the second preseason game. Hightower's inability to make people miss and Ryan Torain's frail body should eventually lead to starts for Helu at some point this season.
13. Aaron Hernandez, TE, Patriots - ADP 143.3
A uniquely talented pass-catcher with Tom Brady as his quarterback should never be going this late. While Rob Gronkowski is the obvious red-zone option, the five-round gap between the two tight ends' ADP is stunning. Hernandez averaged 54.5 yards a day through the first eight games of last season and won't be 22 years old until November. Nice upside.
14. Greg Olsen, TE, Panthers - ADP 144.0
The Panthers have no legit No. 2 receiver, which is just fine by them. That's because new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski loves to feature the tight end in the passing game and they acquired Olsen after the lockout. While the raw skills of Cam Newton caps Olsen's upside, he still is a strong bet to reach 60 catches.
15. Greg Little, WR, Browns - ADP 148.1
Little isn't officially listed as a starting wideout yet, but that will come sooner rather than later. Brian Robiskie is among the least productive players in the league and Josh Cribbs is not a receiver. Little was drafted to be the physical, run-after-catch receiver that Colt McCoy's weak arm needs in the West Coast offense. His target count figures to grow as the year goes on.
16. Denarius Moore, WR, Raiders
Making big waves at Raiders camp. If they ever bail on Darrius Heyward-Bey like they should, Moore looks like a player.
17. Arrelious Benn, WR, Bucs
Dezmon Briscoe is impressing as Benn continues his recovery from a torn ACL. These two could be battling for reps and targets into the season.
18. Jacoby Jones, WR, Texans
He can't beat out Kevin Walter, so he'll need an injury to be relevant.
19. Tony Moeaki, TE, Chiefs
Excellent pass-catcher, but the Chiefs' run-first offense quiets major buzz.
20. Lance Kendricks, TE, Rams
One of the biggest standouts at Rams camp, Kendricks is being used all over the field in a variety of roles. Exciting prospect.

Three Types of Feline Food Supporting Cat Nutrition | PETS Info Blog
We cat lovers adore our feline friends. As such, it?s important that we feed them the right foods so that they can grow healthy and strong. There?s an array of food for cats on the market, so knowing a bit about his nutritional needs can help you select the best meals. Here?s a basic crash course on all things cat food related.?
Cat Nutrition Basics
It?s most important that your cat gets lot of protein in his diet. Since cats are primarily carnivores, lean meats should make up the bulk of their food. One reason why cats need meat is because their bodies don?t naturally produce taurine, an essential amino acid found therein. Make sure your cat?s food lists lean protein from real meat sources as the very first ingredient.
It?s okay to give your feline food that contains some carbohydrates, but do take care that ingredients such as corn and/or grains aren?t at the top of the ingredients list. Carbohydrates shouldn?t make up more than 20% of your cat?s diet because overindulgence can lead to obesity.
Some fats are also good and necessary for your cat. Many foods that contain healthy fats (like fish) are high in healthy vitamins like K, A, D and E. These ingredients protect your cat?s nails and teeth, keep his fur glossy and contribute to a myriad of other benefits.
1) Wet Food
Wet food contains water, helping to hydrate your cat, and it closely mimics the tender texture of meat, which is what your cat would naturally seek out in the wild.?
Wet food flavors vary greatly, and you can have fun with picking different tastes to see what your cat loves most. Some wet foods come in a pouch, containing real meat in its natural juice. Entr?e flavors include Tuna, Sardine & Mackerel, Whitefish, Chicken, Chicken & Beef, Chicken & Duck and more. Other wet foods come in trays, which are easy to serve and simple in terms of portion control. Many of the same flavors are available, in addition to: Filet Mignon, Roasted Turkey and Alaskan King Crab.
2) Dry Cat Food
Dry foods can come in a variety of meat flavors as well. Many of the best dry foods use real, lean meat as the first ingredient, which is important. Some benefits of dry food are cost effectiveness and possible teeth cleaning benefits for your feline friend.
3) Cat Treats
Cat snacks and treats come in a variety of flavors and textures. While treats shouldn?t be the mainstay of your cat?s diet, they can make for a nice snack in between meals or during training. Treats can come in crunchy, soft or combination form, and they are offered in almost as many flavors as wet and dry main course foods.

Carlos Slim boosts stakes in New York Times and Saks (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Billionaire Carlos Slim Helu has increased his stakes in newspaper company New York Times Co and luxury retailer Saks Inc.
Through the fund Inmobiliaria Carso S A, Slim bought 553,000 Class A shares of New York Times on August 18 at prices ranging from $6.83 to $7.09 per share, according a regulatory filing.
The purchases increased Slim's stake in the company, which publishes its namesake newspaper as well as the Boston Globe, to 7.3 percent from 6.9 percent.
Slim, Saks' largest shareholder, bought 620,000 Sakes shares on August 18, giving him a total of 26.24 million, or a 16 percent stake in the upscale department store chain's shares. In early 2010 he held 25.62 million Saks shares.
Shares of New York Times and Saks rose about 4 percent on Tuesday.
Slim, with a fortune estimated at about $74 billion, was named the world's richest man by Forbes magazine in March for the second year running.
The 71-year-old Mexican tycoon has a reputation for having an eye for a bargain. He recently sold a stake he had accumulated in oil services company Bronco Drilling for a healthy profit.
New York Times repaid a $250 million loan to Slim on August 15, about five months earlier than expected.
Slim still holds warrants to buy 15.9 million Class A common shares of New York Times. The warrants expire on January 15, 2015.
Shares of New York Times are down nearly 36 percent this year.
Saks' shares are off 35.6 percent from 52-week highs hit in February on fears the stock market volatility and Wall Street layoffs could prompt luxury shoppers to pull back.
Saks last week forecast sales at its stores open a year or more would rise by a mid-to-high single-digit percentage in the second half of its fiscal year, which includes the holiday season. It said the current state of the stock market and the economy warranted caution in its planning.

Perry wrestles with his own health care approach (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Texas would be among the biggest beneficiaries of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, standing to gain coverage for nearly 4 million uninsured residents.
But Gov. Rick Perry blocked moves to lay the groundwork for that expansion of coverage, and among the alternatives he's supported is an untested regional solution that could prove as controversial as Obama's remake.
With Perry running for the Republican presidential nomination, health care in Texas and his own ideas as governor will get fly-speck scrutiny on the national stage. His state is a study in contrasts, boasting world-renowned facilities like the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, along with the highest proportion of uninsured residents of any state ? 26 percent.
As a national candidate Perry has made total repeal of "Obamacare" central to his fledgling campaign. But it's unclear what he would put in its place. And if the Supreme Court ultimately upholds all or parts of the law, Perry has signaled that he would help carry out key provisions to avoid defaulting to the federal bureaucracy.
Texas has received various grants under Obama's law for planning, insurance regulation and consumer education. The state employee benefits system says it expects to draw $60 million in federal subsidies this year to help cover its early retirees, cashing in on a provision of the law.
But when Republican state Rep. John Zerwas tried to move legislation to set up an insurance purchasing pool required by the national overhaul, he ran into a veto threat from Perry.
The purchasing pools ? called exchanges ? are one of the key features of Obama's law. Run by the states, they would let consumers buy coverage from a choice of private plans. Most individuals and families in the exchanges would be eligible for federal tax credits to lower their premiums.
Exchanges are supposed to open in 2014. If a state doesn't act in advance, the law authorizes the federal government to set up and run its exchange. And since the Texas legislature meets only every other year, this past session was seen as perhaps the state's only opportunity.
But Zerwas said Perry told him he was concerned that moving ahead with the exchange legislation would undermine a multistate lawsuit against the federal overhaul that Texas is part of, not to mention creating other political problems. The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the law's requirement that Americans obtain health insurance ? the so-called individual mandate ? an issue on which lower courts have split.
"Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, health insurance exchanges have become synonymous with Obamacare," said Zerwas. An anesthesiologist from the Houston suburbs, Zerwas said he believes it's worth taking the flak to guarantee that Texas will retain control of its insurance market. The governor disagreed.
"The position (Perry) was taking veers into some political considerations," said Zerwas. "He felt it would not ring well with some of the constituents and grassroots out there, and frankly, he was concerned it could potentially weaken the arguments in the lawsuit."
In the end, Zerwas said Perry reassured him that as governor he could put the exchange legislation into place through an executive order, should that become necessary. A spokeswoman for the federal Health and Human Services department said that would be possible under a newly flexible approach the feds are taking.
A spokeswoman for the governor, Lucy Nashed, said Perry believes there are too many unknowns about the federal law to move ahead. "It's premature to be setting up anything that has to do with the federal health care bill because so much of it is still up to the courts with regard to its constitutionality," she said.
That still leaves Texas with the nation's lowest rate of insurance coverage, even when compared to other states that have high immigrant populations. Experts say one of the key problems is a relatively low level of employer-sponsored private coverage. Many of the Texans who would gain coverage under Obama's law would be middle-class workers and their families, newly eligible to join the exchange.
Nashed said Perry has advocated a range of health care fixes, including national caps on malpractice lawsuits, conversion to electronic medical records and efforts to keep patients healthy and out of hospitals. He also signed legislation this year that would clear the way for Texas to explore a health care overhaul in conjunction with other states.
That may sound like an innocuous proposal, but it could turn out to be more controversial than Obama's overhaul.
The idea behind so-called state compacts is for the federal government to turn over Medicare and Medicaid funds to a group of states to use as they deem best for their citizens' needs. It would be the biggest re-engineering since the giant health care programs were created in the 1960s ? assuming that groups of states could actually agree on what to do and Congress would give its consent.
"How could any one state control its costs?" asked Bob Laszewski, a health policy consultant to industry. It's like the Euro zone, he added, referring to Europe's troubled economies. "It's not states' rights anymore. These states would have to cede a lot of authority to a new entity."

Find Out Why Back Pain Relief Exercises Work ? Health & Fitness
We all tend to use back pain exercises as a way to get relief from chronic back pain. But it seems that most only get a temporary relief at best. We will look at why this is the case. But before we can answer this we need to understand why your back is hurting in the first place. For most people it comes down to three main reasons as to why they are having back pain. Of course these reasons can also be combined which further confuses the solution. Regardless, many people assume that back pain is primarily a result of tight muscles. This is only partly right.
The truth is that different back pain relief exercises can help bring you some relief from your back pain. How long this relief lasts depends upon the underlying issue or cause of your back pain. If you are not concentrating on the true cause, how can you find true relief? If relief is only fleeting then there is a very good chance that you are missing a piece of the puzzle and the back pain relief exercises that you are presently doing are not addressing the underlying problem.
Muscle Imbalances ? Often when there is a problem with one muscle in your back, other muscles or one particular muscle will compensate for the weakened muscle. This can lead to back pain and can cause further issues with your back. This is often why your back might become even more painful even if you are doing back pain relief exercises. One muscle may be compromised due to blood flow issues or a nerve issue and thus, another muscle or set of muscles tries to pick up the slack while making your back pain worse.
Joint Imbalances ? Joint imbalances are exactly what the name implies. A joint becomes compromised due to factors unique just to that particular joint or due to compensating for the back pain that you may be experiencing due to trigger points or muscle imbalances. When a joint or pivotal point becomes compromised and is not working as is intended it can cause your body to work in ways that it was not intended thus causing back pain and causes further back pain.
Trigger Points ? Trigger points or what is commonly referred to as muscle spasms can be caused by injury to a muscle or due to prolonged stress upon a particular muscle. Trigger points can be very painful and can actually increase the likelihood of muscle imbalances and pain in your back. Trigger points can also further complicate things by causing joint imbalances as your body compensates for the lack of mobility due to the back pain that you may be experiencing.
As you can see, many of these factors that can cause back pain can be linked. It is not uncommon for one factor that led to your back pain to cause multiple problems or areas of back pain. This is why it is important to take all three areas into consideration when you are looking at relieving your back pain through back pain relief exercises. By focusing on only one or two areas you very well may be missing the crucial element that is causing your back pain and back pain relief will become elusive to the point of needing professional attention.
A failure to address all three areas that may be causing your back pain will lead to no relief from you back pain or temporary relief, at best. Knowing what the areas are that are causing your back pain can help you to choose the right back pain relief exercises and get some long lasting relief from your back pain.

This would not just provide your loved ones with financial assistance but the profits from the life insurance can also be used to pay off unsettled obligations that you?ve left behind. This way, your beneficiaries do not need to shoulder the responsibility and also do not have to sell some of your own properties to pay them off.
Have more control over your property by setting up a trust
If you would like additional control over all your financial and also estate properties, establishing a trust is actually a great option. A trust performs like a will since you can also specify the beneficiaries of your properties once you pass away. However, in this kind of agreement, you may set principles as to when and how your valuables will be distributed. Your own beneficiaries might not need to see probate court to handle this particular process. Additionally, a trust can also aid reduce or even terminate real estate taxes and keep lenders away from your assets.
Indicate the names of your recipients in all your accounts and also assets
Clearly specify the names of your recipients when generating a trust or will. Realize that when you die, only the names acknowledged in the documents are allowed entry to your properties. Apart from specifying the names of your trust and will?s receivers, you?ll have to name the grantees of your additional properties not included in your will and trust. This could involve your retirement account, current banking accounts as well as other assets which will be distributed by the probate court.
Estate and financial planning is a wise decision to make especially when you are thinking of the security and welfare of your family and loved ones.

Short Term Business Loans: Suitable source of finance for business ...
Business is based on the money completely and it is obvious. You are making big mistake, if you think that business can be run easily without much finance. Usually, most of the entrepreneurs like to borrow money from banks and lenders to tackle business properly. Before obtaining money from financial institutions, it is mandatory to consider almost every important point. In United Kingdom, there are various types of financial products and services available. Choosing a correct product according to the requirement is very important. Many times, people get confused as well due to availability of numerous services. Whenever you search for better financial service, please keep in mind that you should borrow cash for minimum time period. Short term business loans can help you a lot in such circumstances. These loans are also known as and are easily available with all lenders and financial institutions in UK financial market.
]]>
?
With long term loans, you pay small monthly payment for long period of time. As a result, business owners pay huge amount at the end of the day to lender. In , lenders provide cash for the period of 6 months-5 years. Hence, individual can start a debt free life shortly and you have to pay very minimum interest rate. As far as usage is concerned, entrepreneur can use the cash for any purpose, like buying machinery, tools, equipments, new technology, land, office, etc. This financial service can be divided into two categories, secured and unsecured loans.
?
Secured loan ? Here, consumers can avail bigger loan amount in the range of ?10000-?250000 for the period of 1-5 years. This option provides cheap interest rate and APR because needy person has to place collateral against the funds. It is a risky option for borrowers.
?
Unsecured loan ? It is an ideal option for those entrepreneurs who are living as tenant or do not want to pledge collateral against the money. However, you get slightly high interest rate here with small loan amount in the range of ?5000-?75000 for the period of 6 months-2 years.
?
Short term business loans are approved on the basis of borrower?s monthly income and repayment capability.

NIST uncovers reliability issues for carbon nanotubes in future electronics

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
Carbon nanotubes offer big promise in a small package. For instance, these tiny cylinders of carbon molecules theoretically can carry 1,000 times more electric current than a metal conductor of the same size. It's easy to imagine carbon nanotubes replacing copper wiring in future nanoscale electronics.
Butnot so fast. Recent tests at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) suggest device reliability is a major issue.
Copper wires transport power and other signals among all the parts of integrated circuits; even one failed conductor can cause chip failure. As a rough comparison, NIST researchers fabricated and tested numerous nanotube interconnects between metal electrodes. NIST test results, described at a conference this week,* show that nanotubes can sustain extremely high current densities (tens to hundreds of times larger than that in a typical semiconductor circuit) for several hours but slowly degrade under constant current. Of greater concern, the metal electrodes failthe edges recede and clumpwhen currents rise above a certain threshold. The circuits failed in about 40 hours.
While many researchers around the world are studying nanotube fabrication and properties, the NIST work offers an early look at how these materials may behave in real electronic devices over the long term. To support industrial applications of these novel materials, NIST is developing measurement and test techniques and studying a variety of nanotube structures, zeroing in on what happens at the intersections of nanotubes and metals and between different nanotubes. "The common link is that we really need to study the interfaces," says Mark Strus, a NIST postdoctoral researcher.
In another, related study published recently,** NIST researchers identified failures in carbon nanotube networksmaterials in which electrons physically hop from tube to tube. Failures in this case seemed to occur between nanotubes, the point of highest resistance, Strus says. By monitoring the starting resistance and initial stages of material degradation, researchers could predict whether resistance would degrade graduallyallowing operational limits to be setor in a sporadic, unpredictable way that would undermine device performance. NIST developed electrical stress tests that link initial resistance to degradation rate, predictability of failure and total device lifetime. The test can be used to screen for proper fabrication and reliability of nanotube networks.
Despite the reliability concerns, Strus imagines that carbon nanotube networks may ultimately be very useful for some electronic applications. "For instance, carbon nanotube networks may not be the replacement for copper in logic or memory devices, but they may turn out to be interconnects for flexible electronic displays or photovoltaics," Strus says.
Overall, the NIST research will help qualify nanotube materials for next-generation electronics, and help process developers determine how well a structure may tolerate high electric current and adjust processing accordingly to optimize both performance and reliability.

Minn. boy makes $50K hockey shot, but will it pay?
Nate Smith, 11, holds his stick up in jubilation after sinking a trick shot during a charity hockey game Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, in Faribault, Minn. Nate shot a puck 89 feet and through a tiny hole barely larger than the puck to win a $50,000 prize, but may be whistled for a rules violation because it was his brother Nick's name that had been drawn for the chance to make the shot. Nate's father Pat Smith wanted to set a good example for the kids and told organizers the next day. FARIBAULT, Minn. (AP) ? An 11-year-old Minnesota boy has made an astounding hockey shot ? sending a puck into a tiny hole 89 feet away.
The shot at a charity game should be worth $50,000, but there's one problem: Nate Smith was standing in for his identical twin, Nick.
Nick Smith says he was outside when his ticket was drawn to make the shot Thursday at the charity game in Faribault (FAIR'-boh). So, his brother stepped in.
Nate Smith says he was "stunned" when the puck went in.
Their father told organizers Nate, not Nick, made the shot. Pat Smith says honesty is the best policy.
The general manager of the company that insured the raffle says processing claims takes about three weeks and he can't make a decision on payment until he's done.

Articles 20VN | For the Uninitiated - Quick Wine Tips | wine ...
It's important to know, above all, that wine tastes differ from person to person. Like literature, some wines will pique your interest while others will bore. This is to be expected. Each wine has its own distinct flavor, so many options present themselves when you make the decision to become a wine aficionado, from sweet Zinfandels to buttery Chardonnays. As with any other food or drink, wine suits the specific tastes of the individual, and it's all as complicated as you make it out to be. Here's a brief rundown of the things you should know before you attend your next wine outing:
Types
First off, there are red and white wines. Color is typically the first attribute most wine drinkers will critique, so it's good to know a little about the importance of your wine's hue. As a general rule, red wines tend to taste more complex and woody. This is due to leaving in the woody pieces, like stems, during the fermentation process. If you're just starting out, you might find white wines more palatable; these wines are usually sweeter and fruitier.
Etiquette
When serving guests, it is generally accepted to sample the wine after uncorking to determine its quality. Do this away from the guests: the goal is to provide quality wine without seeming like a newbie. Keep in mind that particles will often settle in the bottom of the bottle, particularly with older vintages, so be sure to avoid pouring a guest an unwanted amount of solids. At restaurants, the host should overlook the ordering and sampling process. Wine should be passed clockwise, ladies first.
Tools of the Trade
Corkscrews come in various designs, from the standard wooden-handled "t" to electronic devices that do the work for you. Electronic corkscrews are typically battery-operated and quite efficient. Wine decanters are vessels (similar to vases) into which wines are poured after uncorking. When serving guests, the drink is generally left in a decanter for approximately 20 minutes, a measure that allows your wine to breath once it has been poured. This results in a dramatic increase in subtlety and complexity, particularly for reds.

Help starving Somalia now
The worst drought in 60 years has brought 12 million people to the brink of starvation. Time is running out to avoid a large-scale disaster.
Eastern Kenya is home to Dadaab, the largest refugee camp in the world. Built two decades ago to house 90,000 people, today it shelters 420,000.
Skip to next paragraphAnd more than a thousand others are arriving every day. Why? Because the worst drought in 60 years is spreading across the Horn of Africa, in the continent?s northeastern corner.
At the epicenter is Somalia, where Al Qaeda-inspired Islamist group Al Shabab has been making delivery of humanitarian aid difficult. Already more than 29,000 children under the age of five have died in Somalia due to drought and famine. Some 12 million more Somalis of all ages risk of starvation.
Glimmers of good news can be seen. Al Shabab apparently has pulled out of Mogadishu, the capital city, which should make relief efforts easier. And the United States has made an exception to a provision in the Patriot Act that prevented it from sending aid to places like Somalia, where it might fall into the hands of terrorists such as Al Shabab.
What?s needed now is for those who pledged food aid to the region at the 2009 G-8 Summit to make good on their commitments. So far the United Nations has raised less than half of the $2.4 billion it asked for from donor countries.
The US has provided $580 million in aid to the region this year, making it the largest single donor.
This leadership role is one that the US should welcome and the American people expect.
?Humanitarian assistance is in the American DNA. It is one of our core values, and the American people have shown time and again that we will give to help people in dire circumstances,? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said yesterday in a speech about the crisis.
But much more needs to be done ? and quickly.
Private donations can play a crucial role. The website for Interaction (Interaction.org), the largest alliance of US-based international aid groups, is one place Americans can go to find a list of reputable organizations responding to the drought crisis.
Americans might find inspiration in the example of 11-year-old Andrew Adansi-Bonnah, who lives in Accra, Ghana. According to the Associated Press, he?s raised about $6,500 in pledges so far for his Save Somali Children from Hunger fund. His father, a schoolteacher, has contributed $600 ? his entire July salary ? to the fund.
Annual incomes in Ghana, in west Africa, average only $2,500.
?There are hungry people in Ghana but our situation is not as desperate as the people of Somalia,? the boy told the AP. ?This is a moment that mankind can touch lives. There is no point for others to have so much to eat while others have nothing to eat. It is not right.?
Long term, the solution means heading off famines before they can start. Many promising avenues are already are being explored. They need consist, sustained backing.
Besides promoting political stability, always an essential, solutions include developing drought-resistant crops that are also rich in nutrients; reducing barriers to trade among African countries; and helping the populations in general to adapt to the region?s increasingly erratic and hotter climate.
The goal must be to help the region get on its feet and able to help itself.
?We need to rise to the level of this emergency by acting smarter and faster than we have before to achieve both short-term relief and long-term progress,? Mrs. Clinton said. As donors do that those in the Horn of Africa will begin to ?become [our] partners to do even more to help people [there] live up to their own God-given potential.?
Only when Dadaab refugee camp can be closed, no longer the size of Atlanta, can the world declare its work in Somalia to be done.
