do you believe the search for popularity leads to self-improvement ...

to be popular you need to be somethings others will approve of.
this approval comes at a cost. i dont think the search for popularity leads to self improvement, but i have seen it lead to self destruction! (not lying)

to be likable to others you stop thinking about what is right or even what you want as a person with the power to decide. you think about never being less than what is expected of you. . . you spend most of your time worrying about things that only effect your life for a short while, and by the time you realise you?ve reached a situation were you arent satisfied with just the popularity. . . it would be too late to think about how you could have spent that time doing something that had a future, rather than something that makes you assume you have power!
