Mountain West football schedule adjusts for changes

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said Tuesday that he's more focused on who the Falcons are playing than who they're not after the Mountain West announced its conference schedules for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

The Mountain West will have eight football teams this season and 10 starting in 2012. Boise State joins the Mountain West in two weeks, but Utah and Brigham Young are leaving the conference. Nevada, Fresno State and Hawaii will be Mountain West members next year, when Texas Christian leaves.

Each football team in the Mountain West will play seven conference games this year and eight starting in 2012.

Air Force plays at Boise State on Oct. 22, but the Falcons won't play the Broncos in 2012 or 2013.

"It's a long way to 2013," Calhoun said, "and who knows what might happen in college football between now and then?"

Calhoun said Air Force's primary attention remains on annual games against Commander-in-Chief's Trophy rivals Army and Navy. But other nonconference games are sure to grab the Falcons' attention too. They play at Notre Dame on Oct. 8 and at Michigan next year.

According to the Mountain West, Air Force will play 2012 conference home games against Colorado State, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico and conference road games against Fresno State, San Diego State, Nevada-Las Vegas and Wyoming. The sites of the games are reversed in 2013.

CSU will have to wait for 2014 to avenge last season's 51-6 loss at Nevada. The Rams won't play Nevada in 2012 or 2013, the Wolf Pack's first two seasons as a Mountain West member.

According to the Mountain West, CSU will play 2012 conference home games against Fresno State, Hawaii, New Mexico and UNLV and conference road games against Boise State, San Diego State and Wyoming in addition to Air Force. The sites of the games are reversed in 2013 ? meaning the Rams, like the Falcons, can schedule a 13th game that season because they will be playing at Hawaii.

Air Force's season opener this year is Sept. 3 at Falcon Stadium against South Dakota. Air Force's Mountain West opener is a Sept. 10 home game against TCU.

CSU's season opener is a Mountain West game Sept. 3 at New Mexico.

CSU adds lineman.

Offensive lineman A.J. Frieler, a 6-foot-5, 295-pound former Greeley West star, will be eligible to play this season as a Colorado State freshman after spending one year at the Air Force Academy's prep school. Frieler played on two conference championship teams at Greeley West, which advanced to the Class 4A state title game in 2008 against Wheat Ridge when Frieler was a junior. His uncle, Mitch Roggy, played for CSU and cousin Connor Roggy is a defensive back with the Rams.
