Would you want your smartphone to have a pulse? (Yahoo! News)

New design concept would give your handset emotions

Most of us look after our beloved?smartphones as though they were our children, but what if your handset was just a little more human? That's what designer Fabian Hemmert envisions with a trio of new concepts that range from mild to wild. The most off-the-wall idea in his bag would give your phone a heartbeat and allow it to express emotions based on its current state.

Using advanced internal mechanisms, Hemmert's prototype designs do things like shift the phone's center of gravity, which he sees being useful in map and GPS applications. A movable internal battery repositions itself based on what direction you are going, which could allow you to spend more time looking up and less time staring at your smartphone screen. Another of Hemmert's designs gives the phone the ability to change shape, catering its screen angle for the benefit of the user.

Using this shape-shifting ability, the most intriguing of his designs actually gives the phone a pulse which quickens or slows based on things like unchecked notifications and missed calls. In order to calm the phone down, the user can simply pet it as they would a small animal. The image above shows the concept, as well as a user calming the device with a gentle stroke.

Hemmert's ambitious prototypes are in the running for the?James Dyson Award. The annual competition calls on talented design students to submit solutions to every day problems, as well as prototypes that could shape the?future. A single grand prize winner and their university will each be awarded $16,000, as well as a trophy and certificate to commemorate their achievement.
