Why the Hype on High Altitude Training? | Recreation and Sports

Sunday, September 11th, 2011 | General

High altitude training is just what it sounds like ?it?s strength and/or cardio training at a high altitude. The rationale? The higher you go into the atmosphere, the less oxygen there's available. {Therefore ,} when you are working out in a high altitude environment, your body becomes more effective as it?s used to using less oxygen. You?ll at first get gassed faster and your cardio sessions will immediately become more intense.

When you return to your standard altitude, taking in a gulp of air will feel just like an indulgence , as your body will be enjoying a lot more oxygen than it?s been used to.

Many athletes train at high altitude in preparation before a challenge or event and it has been proved to make them fitter and stronger. In the world of Mixed Fighting Arts, UFC fighter Tito Ortiz originally popularised altitude training as he travelled to Big Bear for his fight camp.

But it is tricky for all sportsmen to go to a high level environment to train. That?s the reason why many fighters have turned entrepreneurs to form devices to simulate a high level environment.

UFC fighter Wanderlei Silva used trained while breathing thru a snorkel. This of course limited his oxygen intake and he has attested to this being a big performance enhancer.

What has enormously increased awareness of high altitude training is the product lately invented by UFC fighter Sean Sherk. He and his team have invented an elevation training mask which also lets you adjust the difficulty level to simulate various levels of altitude training.

Many athletes now promote and use this training mask and it?s been proven to increase cardio vascular capabilities. Though grappling is not possible with the mask due to dangers linked with it clashing against your training partner, many fighters have been able to continue their pad and circuit exercise routines. Mixed martial artists have reported the simplicity of then working out without the mask.

Although elevation training is an accelerating trend, players in this sort of activity must be aware about the associated risks. Limiting oxygen intake could well lead to you passing out if you overexert yourself. It?s therefore strongly recommended that you only perform high altitude training or use a device like the training mask when with a training partner. If using the elevation training mask, you need to take advantage of the facility to switch to different difficultly nozzles to make sure you build up your conditioning slowly. Know your boundaries and seek medical advice before engaging in arduous activities.

Sunny Singh is experienced in high altitude training and recently reviewed his experience with the elevation training mask.
